The proposal on the table breaks a long-held taboo in Brussels as Russian gas has been until now completely spared from any restrictions, despite repeated calls from Poland, the Baltics, the Nordics and, most passionately, Ukraine. But the plan, designed by the European Commission, falls short of an all-out import ban, as the bloc previously did with coal and seaborne oil. Instead, it aims to prohibit trans-shipments of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), meaning the practice of re-exporting LNG that arrives at EU ports to other countries. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA...

In what would be the first move of its kind, the EU may be considering sanctions against the Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector. As part of the 14th round of sanctions against Russia by the EU, these new measures would target the re-export of Russian LNG from EU countries. Such a move would also crack down on the use of any EU facilities including the use of ports to ship Russian LNG, as well as any other goods which are seen to be directly contributing to Russia's continued battle in Ukraine. Not only that, but it would also compel EU companies and operators to be more careful of any ...

Turkey is in discussions with US energy giant ExxonMobil regarding a multibillion-dollar deal to buy liquefied natural gas. In an interview with the Financial Times, Turkish energy minister Alparslan Bayraktar said that his country was hoping to diversify its energy providers, therefore bolstering national security. As part of the proposed deal, Turkey would secure up to 2.5 million tonnes of LNG a year from Exxon, at a cost of around $1.1 billion. The agreement could last a decade, although the exact conditions were yet to be determined, Bayraktar said. Watchdog urges caution on reducing Russ...

Imports of Russian liquified natural gas (LNG) remain a source of energy security for the EU and should only be reduced in “gradual steps” to avoid disruptions in supply, an EU watchdog warned. The advice was published in a report today (April 19) by ACER, the EU agency for the cooperation of energy regulators, offering analysis on European LNG market developments, which noted that the EU imported 18 billion cubic metres (bcm) of Russian LNG in 2023 via the Yamal pipeline, mostly through long-term supply agreements signed before 2022. The report flagged that increasing EU reliance on Russian L...

French multinational TotalEnergies' intended resumption of natural gas extraction in Mozambique risks falling foul of the EU's nascent Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, NGOs have claimed. After a terror attack in 2021 killed dozens of people in northern Mozambique, energy majors TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and Eni terminated operations in the gas-rich Cabo Delgado region. However, during a presentation of TotalEnergies’ 2023 annual results held in February, CEO Patrick Pouyanné said it intended to resume operations in the southern African country this year. NGO Climate Action Net...

An EU joint tendering platform for gas contracts designed to help the continent stand without Russia was three times oversubscribed attracting a total volume of 97.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) from international suppliers, the EU executive announced today (28 February). The tender, carried out through AggregateEU, the matching platform launched in 2023 to ensure sufficient energy supply for the winter 2023-2024, started on February 15 and closed last night. The platform was created to aggregate EU gas company demand and attract supplies from international contractors. This year the matching pl...
