For the first time in five years, there’s a Star Wars movie in theaters. It’s not a new one, though. This year, Disney and Lucasfilm used May the 4th to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the first Star Wars prequel. (Yes, The Phantom Menace is older today than the first Star Wars was when The Phantom Menace opened in theaters. 1999 itself is now a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.) To call The Phantom Menace’s legacy complicated is an understatement. It arrived in theaters with more hype and anticipation that maybe any other movie in history. I...

The worst Planet of the Apesmovie could have been the best one. Tim Burton’s 2001 Planet of the Apes has gone down in history as one of the worst reboots ever made. (It certainly appears on this website’s list of terrible reboots.) The failure of the final product is not entirely Burton’s fault; 20th Century Fox spent much of the 1980s and ’90s looking for a way to revive the Apes franchise, which was retired following 1973’s Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Fox spend untold millions developing and abandoning various concepts for a new Planet of the Apes before finding one they liked by Will...

No, really, I want to know: What the hell do audiences want out of movies? That is the question on my mind this week as I look at the box-office numbers for The Fall Guy, the new action comedy that also serves as the unofficial kickoff of summer movie season. Variety says the film “fell just short of expectations with $28.5 million” at the weekend box office in North America. Compared to those expectations, the numbers aren’t disastrous — The Fall Guy was only projected to earn about $30 million — but it also cost $140 million to make. So the news is not great. A consultant quoted in Variety’s...

The following post contains spoilers for Unfrosted. You might think what follows is made up. It does not sound real. I assure you, it is. Unfrosted is Jerry Seinfeld’s new Netflix comedy about the origins of the beloved breakfast food, the Pop-Tart. While the film does mention real companies and alludes to actual historical events — there really was a rivalry between Kellogg’s and Post as they both raced each other to market with competing toaster pastries in the early 1960s — much of the film is a work of fiction. That will be quite clear as you are watching it almost from the jump, unless th...

What is the “perfect” length of a movie? According to a new poll of 2,000 Americans conducted by Talker Research, “the ideal average length” of a movie is just 92 minutes — just an hour and a half. It is not clear to me whether that number includes closing credits or not. Their report finds that “the average person wants to spend far less time at the movie theater going forward.” Only two percent of the people they spoke to — according to my rudimentary math, that means roughly 40 folks — want movies to be longer than two and a half hours. (Whoever you are out there, you 40 individuals, I love...

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier would have been a great title for the final Star Trekmovie. As it turned out, the film was so disliked it almost was the final Star Trek movie, and perhaps would have been the franchise’s farewell if not for two key factors. For one, while The Final Frontier was the lowest-grossing Star Trek film to that point, it was still profitable, grossing roughly $70 million worldwide against a budget of some $30 million. For another, 1991 marked the 25th anniversary of the first Star Trek television series, and Paramount wanted a new film in theaters to commemorate the oc...

He’s the best there is at what he does … and what he does is make bizarre carbonated beverages. There I was at my local multiplex last night, minding my own business on my way toa screening of The Fall Guy, when I glanced at their wall of Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. There, glowing for all the world to see, was an ad for not one but two “limited edition mixes” inspired by the upcoming Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine. They were “Deadpool Chimichanga Chaser Coca-Cola” and “Wolverine Adamantium Orange Coca-Cola.” Now most film critics would see sodas based on a movie and decide they don’t need ...

I don’t remember where I first saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That’s odd; I can usually rattle off exactly where and how I saw my favorite movies. I watched Citizen Kane in the family room of my parents’ old house on a pan-and-scanned VHS tape I rented from Blockbuster Video. I fell in love with Jacques Tati’s Playtime when I saw it projected in a beautiful 70mm print at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. I encountered No Country for Old Men for the first time in one of the smaller theaters tucked into a corner of the Palais in Cannes. While I don’t like it as much as Eternal Suns...

Dickey Betts, who revolutionized the twin-guitar approach in rock before helping lead the Allman Brothers Band out of unspeakable tragedy, has died. The 80-year-old had been suffering from cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He never quite secured individual fame, despite having been such an important part of the Allman Brothers Band. After all, Betts kept nagging the late Duane Allman until he finally recruited younger brother Gregg to sing in their fledgling outfit. By then, he and Duane had already created a collaborative style that made the traditional roles of rhythm and lea...
