By Donald Takhell DELHI, MANIPUR – Swami Laimayum, who was in Manipur when the internet was completely shut down in the aftermath of violence on May 3, 2023, was surprised to find that his sim card still has internet access. Laimayum had a Vodafone sim card which he has been using for almost a decade. There were words around that Vodafone sim had glitches and sometimes internet was accessible from these sim cards, albeit at low speeds. I was in Delhi at that time and Laimayum had video called me on WhatsApp. He said, “I'm the only one with internet, there is no use as my other friends in Manip...

By Archis Chowdhury MANIPUR — Dylan, a young activist, was driving through the peripheries of Imphal, when he spotted his 18-year-old cousin dressed in black attire, holding a gun. The 18-year-old had joined the forces of Arambai Tenggol. Dylan was shocked even as his young cousin walked up to him to seek blessings. The term Arambai refers to "poisoned darts" used by warriors, and Tenggol refers to a troop or platoon in Meitei language. Arambai Tenggol incites various reactions among the locals in Manipur’s capital city: fear, enthusiasm, hatred, and anger. However, through visuals of guns com...

The video, posted on X (formerly Twitter) has been captioned as, "Reportedly a video from #Manipur where a Christian girl was kidnapped. A few hindu men can be seen ripping off her clothes as she screams for help. The hindu men telecast this on SM as she was being...

By Archis Chowdhury A week after Ireland-based newspaper The Irish Times published a scathing editorial piece on the prevalence of ethnic and religious violence in India under the Narendra Modi-led administration, several leaders of Modi's Bharitiya Janata Party shared another article published on the website of the same newspaper, purportedly as an editorial piece by the media outlet praising Modi for 'transforming India'. BOOM found these posts to be misleading; the article being shared by the BJP members, including cabinet ministers, is actually a letter written by the Ambassador Of India t...

By Ritika Jain Supreme Court expressed its anguish at how women have been sexually violated in the course of the sectarian strife in Manipur. The top court’s observation is significant as it acknowledged sexual assault against women in the context of war or a conflict zone. Manipur has been gripped by sectarian violence since May 3. An old photo from Delhi of a woman's dead body wrapped in plastic was peddled with the fake claim that it belonged to a Meitei woman who was sexually assaulted and killed by members of the Kuki tribe was the trigger for a spate of “revenge rape”. BOOM found that th...

By Ritika Jain Since the past few months, Manipur—the bowl-shaped valley in India’s north-east region—is seeing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities after the state high court recommended Schedule Tribe status to the former. According to Reuters, as of July 28, the violence has claimed the lives of 181 people, 300 injured, and approximately 54,488 internally displaced. However, according to a statement issued by 102 journalists with South Asian Women in Media (SAWM), there was “little reporting of Manipur by mainstream TV channels”, and the news that did come out was a tailor...
