The first of several NASA missions aimed at simulating stays on Mars came to an end in Houston, Texas on Saturday after four volunteers left the NASA-built Mars habitat after more than a year. The two women and two men had spent the last 378 days inside Mars Dune Alpha, a 160-square-metre isolated structure at Johnson Space Center in Houston designed to mimic conditions on the Red Planet. The mission was the first of a series dubbed Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) which is intended to help NASA prepare to fly people back to the moon, and one day even Mars. NASA Director...

Washington (AFP) - NASA said Monday it was looking for ways to bring Martian rocks collected by the Perseverance rover back to Earth earlier and at a lower cost than planned after facing criticism for going massively over budget. The effort comes as China is making progress towards a simpler "grab-and-go" sample return mission to the red planet "around 2030," according to state media, which would make it the first nation to achieve the feat. "The bottom line is that $11 billion is too expensive, and not returning samples until 2040 is unacceptably too long," the US space agency's chief Bill Ne...

Washington (AFP) - NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter, which made history by achieving the first powered flight on another world, has officially ended its nearly three-year mission after sustaining rotor damage during its last outing, the space agency said Thursday. The tissue-box sized aircraft, which hitched a ride to the Red Planet under the belly of the Perseverance rover, first lifted off the surface on April 19, 2021. Originally intended only to prove flight was possible in the ultra-thin Martian atmosphere through five test runs, Ingenuity went on to be deployed a total of 72 times, loggi...

By Hazel Gandhi Old visuals from the surface of Mars are viral online as clips taken by Chandrayaan-3 on the moon. BOOM found that the claims are false and the clips have been taken by NASA's Perseverance Rover during a separate space mission. Chandrayaan-3 achieved a historic feat on August 23 after landing its Vikram lander and Pragyan rover on the southern surface of the moon. The rover will now undertake a 14-day mission to conduct experiments on the moon's surface and send its findings back on the Earth through the lander. Amid this, two visuals showing a planet are viral online as images...
