Washington (AFP) - The executive editor of the Washington Post, Sally Buzbee, has abruptly stepped down from the role, as the storied American newspaper undergoes a major restructuring, its chief executive said late Sunday. Assuming the job in 2021, Buzbee was the first female editor of the Post in 150 years. Her departure is part of the biggest move yet by publisher and CEO William Lewis since he took over in January, the newspaper said. Matt Murray, the former editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, is assuming the executive editor position through November's US presidential election, a...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Media magnate Rupert Murdoch has married for the fifth time at age 93, tying the knot with a retired molecular biologist a quarter century younger than him. Murdoch and Elena Zhukova, 67, were wedded Saturday at the media mogul's California vineyard and estate, called Moraga. Photographs published in The Sun, the British tabloid owned by Murdoch, show the couple posing and smiling -- he in a black suit and yellow tie and she in an off-the-shoulder white gown as she clutched a bouquet of lilies of the valley. Jet-set guests at the nuptials included Robert Kraft, 82, the owne...

The final in London on Saturday was also broadcast by paid streaming service DAZN, which doesn't publish viewing figures.

Poland's domestic intelligence service is investigating whether the state news agency PAP was the target of a Russian cyberattack, after it falsely reported the country was about to partially mobilize its military. Digitalisation Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said in Warsaw on Friday that "everything points to the fact that we are dealing with a cyberattack that was directed from the Russian side." Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on the X platform: "Another very dangerous hacker attack is a good illustration of the Russian strategy of destabilization on the eve of the European elections." The ...

A Russian court has extended the pre-trial detention of US journalist Alsu Kurmasheva until the beginning of August, the Prague-based US foreign broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported on Friday. A request by her defence lawyers to release her under house arrest was rejected by the district court in Kazan, RFE/RL said. Kurmasheva, who works for the station's Tatar programme, has been prevented from leaving Russia for a year, and has been in prison since October. RFE/RL condemned the imprisonment and said it was a punishment for Kurmasheva's journalistic work. Kurmasheva h...

In the hours following the attempted assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on May 15, 2024, fake news and conspiracy theories began circulating online. Some of these speculations tried to connect the alleged shooter, Juraj Cintula, a 71-year-old self-described writer, to Slovakia's main opposition party. This type of disinformation is hardly surprising. Back in April, Euronews travelled to Bratislava to report on the scale of disinformation in Slovakia, through the experience and viewpoints of journalists, researchers, fact-checkers and media teachers working to combat these false...

A Georgian parliament committee rejected on Monday the president’s veto of the "foreign agents" law which has sparked massive protests for weeks. The move sets up the possibility of a vote of the full legislature on Tuesday to override President Salome Zourabichvili’s veto of the measure, which she and other critics say will restrict media freedom and obstruct Georgia’s chances of joining the European Union. The law would require news media and non-governmental organisations that get more than 20% of their budget from abroad to register as “carrying out the interests of a foreign power.” Oppon...

Warner Bros.
