Washington (AFP) - Human relationships are inherently shaped by power dynamics, yet quantifying their impact has remained a scientific challenge. Now, a large new study published Thursday in the journal Science reveals that military doctors give more attention to higher-ranked patients, providing concrete evidence about the privileges that come with elevated status, frequently at the expense of the less powerful. "One of the things we are trying to show is that this is not a military-specific analysis," said co-author Manasvini Singh of Carnegie Mellon University, arguing the findings are just...

A group of French organisations have called for more transparency from pharmaceutical companies as drug shortages increase. In a joint report, 14 civil society organisations outlined their recommendations to solve a “situation that has only worsened” since 2018. The French medicines regulator signalled 4,925 drug shortages in 2023, compared to 3,761 in 2022 and 2,160 in 2021. A 2024 survey from France Assos Santé, which represents patients, found that 44 per cent of people in France said they had faced a drug shortage this year. One of the pharmacy unions in France has even planned a strike at...

The pharma giant AstraZeneca has requested that the European authorisation for its Covid-19 vaccine be pulled, according to the EU medicines regulator. In an update on the European Medicines Agency’s website Wednesday, the regulator said that the approval for AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevria had been withdrawn “at the request of the marketing authorization holder.” AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine was first given the nod by the EMA in January 2021. Within weeks, however, concerns grew about the vaccine’s safety, when dozens of countries suspended the vaccine’s use after unusual but rare blood clots were ...

They outlined the top causes of accidental poisonings that led to a call to a poison control centre, a trip to the emergency room, or hospitalisation between 2014 and 2020. Brussels has long accused Beijing of employing distorting and discriminatory practices that make it all but impossible for European companies to win public contracts in China in the valuable sector of medical devices, where the bloc still retains a competitive edge. These practices include slow certification processes and opaque approval systems for foreign manufacturers, as well as policies to beef up the national economy. In addition, the EU's medical device industry has repeatedly reported that Chinese public tenders previously open to imports now specifically request China-made products. G...

Patients treated by female doctors have a lower mortality rate when compared to patients treated by their male counterparts, a new study suggests. Researchers found this was especially true for female patients and observed a similar pattern for hospital readmission rates. The team published their findings in the scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine. “What our findings indicate is that female and male physicians practice medicine differently, and these differences have a meaningful impact on patients' health outcomes,” Dr Yusuke Tsugawa, an associate professor-in-residence at the Univ...

"Patients currently on therapy in the US and Canada who, in consultation with their physician, wish to stay on treatment can be transitioned to a free drug [programme]," the company said.
