The pharma giant AstraZeneca has requested that the European authorisation for its Covid-19 vaccine be pulled, according to the EU medicines regulator. In an update on the European Medicines Agency’s website Wednesday, the regulator said that the approval for AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevria had been withdrawn “at the request of the marketing authorization holder.” AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine was first given the nod by the EMA in January 2021. Within weeks, however, concerns grew about the vaccine’s safety, when dozens of countries suspended the vaccine’s use after unusual but rare blood clots were ...

The top three most frequent and serious causes of accidental poisonings in children in France were household cleaning products, human medications, and carbon monoxide, according to a new report. France's National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) said that while most accidental poisonings are harmless, some can be serious or even fatal. They outlined the top causes of accidental poisonings that led to a call to a poison control centre, a trip to the emergency room, or hospitalisation between 2014 and 2020. Brussels has long accused Beijing of employing distorting and discriminatory practices that make it all but impossible for European companies to win public contracts in China in the valuable sector of medical devices, where the bloc still retains a competitive edge. These practices include slow certification processes and opaque approval systems for foreign manufacturers, as well as policies to beef up the national economy. In addition, the EU's medical device industry has repeatedly reported that Chinese public tenders previously open to imports now specifically request China-made products. G...

Patients treated by female doctors have a lower mortality rate when compared to patients treated by their male counterparts, a new study suggests. Researchers found this was especially true for female patients and observed a similar pattern for hospital readmission rates. The team published their findings in the scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine. “What our findings indicate is that female and male physicians practice medicine differently, and these differences have a meaningful impact on patients' health outcomes,” Dr Yusuke Tsugawa, an associate professor-in-residence at the Univ...

The pharmaceutical company behind a drug for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) said it would start a process to remove it from the US and Canadian markets. Amylyx Pharmaceuticals said the drug for ALS also known as motor neurone disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease would no longer be available for new patients after a trial showed it did not work. Researchers have developed a test that could detect colorectal cancer with 83 per cent accuracy using a simple blood sample, according to a new study. The blood test’s high accuracy is comparable to current at-home stool tests. The team published their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine. “The results of the study are a promising step toward developing more convenient tools to detect colorectal cancer early while it is more easily treated,” William M Grady, a gastroenterologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center based in Seattle in the US, said in a statement. “The test, which has an...

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it has concerns over a lack of transparency in the veterinarian industry, affecting both pet owners and vets alike. Overcharged pet ownersThe UK's 16 million pet owners have been or are at risk of being overcharged due to the dysfunctional system in place, the CMA warned. ...

Scientists in Israel have managed to create artificial testicles in what could be a significant step in helping men with fertility issues. The testicles, or testes, are responsible for sperm production and androgen synthesis which play a part in male sexual development. Infertility affects up to 7 per cent of men. Currently, no in vitro system exists for modelling the testis and producing sperm in the same way that IVF treatment can harvest eggs from a female. “Artificial testicles are a promising model for basic research on testicle development and function, which can be translated into thera...

Researchers have found that Omalizumab, a drug commonly prescribed to treat asthma, could also limit “life-threatening reactions” to food allergies in children. Omalizumab, known under the brand name Xolair, is a medication approved to treat severe persistent asthma caused by an allergy. “The day-to-day life of patients with food allergy is consumed by fear of accidental exposure to food allergens,” Dr Robert Wood, professor of paediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University and the study’s main author, said in a statement. “Our findings have the potential to be very meaningful, and potentially ev...
