Fort Lauderdale (United States) (AFP) - Argentine star Lionel Messi landed in Florida on Tuesday ahead of putting the final touches on his move to US Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. Argentine television footage showed Messi, with members of his family, walking off a private jet at a small, executive airport adjacent to Inter Miami's stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The World Cup winner is expected to put pen to paper on a two and a half year deal, reported to be worth $60 million a year, before being presented to fans at a stadium event on Sunday. "We are happy with the decision we made. Prep...

Miami (AFP) - The Miami Heat's arena, which had been sponsored by failed crypto giant FTX, will be known as the Miami-Dade Arena until a new naming partner is found, the basketball team announced on Friday. A federal bankruptcy court terminated the sponsorship deal on Wednesday, paving the way for the Heat to make their switch. "Effective immediately Miami-Dade County and the Miami Heat have agreed that until such time as there is a new naming rights partner, to refer to the arena as the Miami-Dade Arena," the team said in a statement. The Heat said that they would begin removing signage and b...

Miami Beach (United States) (AFP) - Music, dancing, alcohol and tiny swimsuits -- spring vacation in the United States, popularly known as "spring break," brings thousands of young people to south Florida every year for a few days of uncontrolled fun, much to the chagrin of residents in cities like Miami Beach. At dusk on a gray Thursday, an unusual occurrence in Miami, going-out hub Ocean Drive has become an open-air club. Cafe terraces are packed to the gills, and the party is on in front of every art deco building along the promenade. The air reeks of marijuana. A car pulls up and blocks tr...

Miami (AFP) - Miami resident Maria Ruby learned last month that her rent will shoot up 65 percent in February. She cannot afford it and does not know where to go. Her plight illustrates an unexpected effect of the coronavirus pandemic: Miami is seeing some of the highest housing cost increases anywhere in the United States. Metropolitan Miami was already a lure even before Covid, with its warm weather, white sand beaches and absence of state -- though not federal -- income tax. It is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city that is attractive to European and Latin American investors. But the pandemi...

Miami (AFP) - Miami's City Council on Thursday fired the police chief after just six months on the job, ending a brief stint marked by controversy. On Monday, the city council had announced Art Acevdeo's suspension and its intention to replace him. On Thursday, the five members of the municipal commission confirmed his dismissal unanimously, at the end of a hearing at the mayor's office which Acevedo attended. His poor relationship with the city council worsened last month after he declared that the Miami police were run by a "Cuban mafia," historically a derogatory term used by Havana to des...

Miami (AFP) - A Miami courthouse is to undergo urgent repairs after a safety review sparked by a deadly building collapse last month found safety concerns, officials said late Friday. The decision to review the Miami-Dade County Courthouse and other county buildings was made "out of an abundance of caution," the officials said in a joint statement, in response to the collapse of the 12-story Champlain Towers South. At least 79 people died in the collapse and 61 people remain missing, feared dead in the building's debris. Rescuers have ended their search for survivors. "The engineer's report of...

Miami Beach (United States) (AFP) - The warm sands of Miami Beach in Florida are again packed with revelers -- a sight that Americans view either as a proof of progress at last against Covid-19, or of a recklessness that could set back the nation's recovery. When the coronavirus began to sweep the globe one year ago, many were horrified to see hordes of hard-partying locals and visitors still gathering in Florida while life elsewhere came to a grinding halt. Every March, during spring break, thousands of people descend on the barrier island of Miami Beach outside the city for a carnival of soc...
