Michigan Democrats are looking into passing new gun legislation following the mass shooting on Michigan State University’s campus that killed three people. Democrats said that they have an opportunity to pass gun safety legislation after years of stalemate with Republicans. They have provided general outlines of proposed bills but have yet to flesh out the details. The new legislation will likely test Michigan‘s Democratic “trifecta.” Democrats gained control of both senate houses, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer cruised to victory during the 2020 midterm elections. Democrats have not controlled...

Michigan Republican Party co-chair Meshawn Maddock labeled Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (D) a “weak little girl” in a tweet. “We’re so blessed this weak little girl moved to Michigan!” Maddock wrote of the openly gay Buttigieg. “Looks like he’s bringing all his California Dreaming here with him.” Buttigieg, along with his husband Chasten, and his two children did recently move to the Great Lakes State, where Buttigieg is originally from. Buttigieg responded to Maddock’s tweet last week. “She wants to talk about little girls. Chasten and I are raising a little girl and a little boy, ...

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers failed to come to a consensus on whether or not to include an abortion rights amendment to the state Constitution on the November ballot. The vote was deadlocked 2-2 along partisan lines, with the Democrats in favor and the Republicans voting to leave it off. In this case, the provision will not make it to the ballot. The sponsor of the amendment, Reproductive Freedom for All, has asked the Michigan Supreme Court to take action, claiming that the Board of State Canvassers should be ordered to qualify the petition to comply with Michigan’s election laws. T...

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) said she would not enforce a “draconian” 1931 abortion law should Roe v. Wade be overturned by the Supreme Court this summer. The law would not allow for abortion in any case – even in cases of rape, incest or saving the life of the mother. It would also allow women and doctors to be criminally charged. On Mother’s Day, Nessel claimed that if the law went into effect, it would “endanger their [mother’s] lives and put to jeopardy the health, safety and welfare of the lives of each and every woman in the state of Michigan.” Nessel’s comments come a week ...

The Michigan GOP is making moves to pass new voting restrictions weeks after similar regulations were approved in Georgia and Texas. Michigan’s Republican-majority state legislature, however, is at odds with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), who has already confirmed that she would veto any new voting restrictions brought to her desk. The GOP, however, is planning to subvert Whitmer with a voter-driven petition. Michigan state law says that a bill submitted by petition cannot be subject to a governor’s veto. The Michigan GOP hopes to move forward with a bill that requires voters submit a pho...
