Gardening is good for you, going by tests carried out by the University of Helsinki, which showed "significant" potential health benefits from keeping just a few potted plants inside your home. "One month of urban indoor gardening boosted the diversity of bacteria on the skin of the subjects and was associated with higher levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the blood," said Mika Saarenpää, a doctoral candidate at the university’s Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The tests exposed some people to "a growing medium with high microbial diversity emulating the forest soil" and...

In a lush greenhouse high in the Alps, butterflies of various species and colours flutter freely while butterfly pupae are suspended in a structure as they grow into adult insects. This is the Butterfly Forest in the tropical mountain greenhouse in Trento, Italy, a project by the Museo delle Scienze (MUSE), an Italian science museum. It's modelled on Udzungwa Mountains, a mountain range and rainforest area in south-central Tanzania that’s one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. The Butterfly Forest features plant species endemic to the region, as well as birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and...

Lying in the shadow of Niigata Prefecture’s Mount Myoko, Imori Pond is a scenic getaway fit for solo travelers and families alike. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll have plenty to enjoy as you circle the pond. According to local legend, the nature reserve that Imori Pond sits in was once private property until a few years ago. In the early 20th century, an artist who often frequented the area looking for inspiration told the owner that the pond’s beauty was unmatched and efforts should be made to preserve it. Convinced by the artist, the owner maintained the land. By the 1970s, it became Ei...
