For the first time, Malaga is putting the brakes on the proliferation of tourist accommodation, with the city council now limiting new licences to properties with a separate entrance. Malaga thus joins other cities and territories that have promoted similar or more restrictive measures, such as Balearic Islands, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Gijón, Madrid, Seville and Valencia, where a one-year moratorium on new tourist housing licences came into effect on 30 May. According to the Andalusian Regional Government Register, Malaga has 12,124 dwellings licensed for tourist use. In the whole of Spain t...

A new agreement between Alaska’s capital city and major cruise lines seeks to cap the daily number of cruise ship passengers arriving in Juneau starting in 2026, though a prominent critic of the cruise industry said on Tuesday the planned limits do not do enough. The agreement, finalised late last week, seeks a daily limit of 16,000 cruise passengers Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 on Saturdays. However, officials said that doesn't necessarily mean there will be that many people every day. Cruise passenger numbers ramped up rapidly after two pandemic-stunted years, hitting a record of more ...

Tourism is pricing locals out of being able to live on Ibiza, campaigners say. Activists are taking to the streets this weekend to protest what they say are the downsides of tourism. According to Prou Ibiza (‘Enough Ibiza’ in Catalan), nurses and police officers are having to live in cars and caravans because housing is unaffordable, and operations and cancer treatment have been delayed because doctors can't afford to live on the white isle. The campaigners are calling on authorities to limit the number of tourist beds in Ibiza, one of Spain’s most popular resorts. They will protest outside th...

A town is Japan has got so fed up with tourists that they have built a huge fence blocking the view of the attraction they are coming for - the famous Mount Fuji. The 20-metre long and 2.5-metre high fence is covered with a black mesh net, not the most social media-friendly backdrop to the selfies that visitors flock here for. Fujikawaguchiko is known to offer some of the best views of the iconic Japanese mountain. But locals have had enough of tourists blocking pavements and stopping traffic to get the perfect shot. A particularly popular photo location was outside a Lawson convenience store,...

On 25 April, Venice launched an entry fee for daytrippers to the canal city. The trial period for this charge covers 29 days in May, June and July - including weekends and public holidays. The measure was introduced to curb the number of visitors who only stay for a day. Those behind the fee say they bring less economic benefit to the city than overnight tourists and cause problems like overcrowding. However, many Venice residents have criticised the entry ticket as ineffective in controlling visitor numbers while condemning the city council for overlooking critical issues such as housing. Her...

Italy's lakes have a firm place in our collective imagination as the epitome of luxury: dreamscapes peppered with yachts, ivy-clad villas and picturesque fishing villages, all crowned with the snow-capped Alps in the background. But when push comes to shove, most people can only name two: Lake Como, Hollywood's very own European enclave with its never-ending array of celebrity-owned waterfront manors; and Lake Garda, whose sprawling beaches and Mediterranean microclimate have made it an obvious tourist favourite. As summer approaches, Euronews Travel looks at a few other lakes dotted around th...
