The crisp musk of an old book. The sweet sting of a lover's perfume on a coat collar. Smells accentuate our experiences and bond us to objects, their imagined memories seeped into our subconscious. But how far could our sense of smell take us when it comes to experiencing masterpieces? Could we, for example, truly feel like we were there as 'Lady with an Ermine' was first created? A team of researchers in Poland and Slovenia are attempting to find out, having developed a scented pen for Leonardo da Vinci's 15th century painting, which visitors of the National Museum in Kraków can now sniff as ...

A painting by French artist Henri Matisse is to be reunited to the heirs of the German-Jewish family who were forced to sell it after escaping Nazi Germany. The Commission for Looted Art in Europe found that Matisse’s Odalisque (1920-1921) was sold out of ‘necessity’ by the German-Jewish Stern family, as a consequence of the persecution they experienced in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. The investigation findings were ratified by the Dutch Committee of Restitution. Amsterdam’s Stedeliijk Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Design, which has held the painting in its collection since 1941, has a...

The first official portrait of King Charles III has been vandalized by a group of British animal rights activists. Activists from Animal Rising, a non-violent organization campaigning for an “urgent transition to a sustainable and just plant-based food system”, pasted posters of the Wallace and Gromit animation film series on the painting of the monarch. They said they had “redecorated” the portrait by Jonathan Yeo in the Philip Mould Gallery in London, which was unveiled last month. It is the first since his coronation, and drew mixed reactions when it was presented. The sovereign's face was ...

La Bellez Común (The Common Beauty) makes a case for a bygone age when shop fronts were a work of art in themselves as artisans were employed to attract customers. The book was the brainchild of two architects, Luis Fernández-Galido and Javier Sánchez Bellver, who sought to record the most picturesque shop fronts for history. The project was completed between 1977-78 but at the time it was not published. It was finally put into print earlier this year, more than four decades on, and has become an unlikely best seller. It is easy, however, to see why the book has created such a stir. Every page...

The last sitting took place in November 2023 at Clarence House, one of the king’s residences in London. The painting captures the king with his hands clasped atop the hilt of his sword and a butterfly flittin...
