The past three months’ best reissues and archival releases focus on artists’ key albums and the stories behind their creations. This is especially true of new releases by David Bowie, Deep Purple and Billy Idol, whose respective best records are expanded for their anniversaries with demos, alternated versions, outtakes and live tracks. But other great records from the first part of the year turn the spotlight on previously unreleased concert recordings. Late-’60s era Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, “Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll” Sister Rosetta Tharpe and spiritual jazz icon Alice Coltr...

Paul McCartney took great joy in roasting his friend Bruce Springsteen at an awards ceremony in London Thursday night. Springsteen became the first non-British recipient of an Ivor Novello Award, which honors quality singing and songwriting work. McCartney was on hand to give the Boss his Ivor – but before that he had a few words to say (via the BBC). He told the audience that he “couldn’t think of a more fitting” winner, before adding: “Except maybe Bob Dylan. Or Paul Simon, or Billy Joel, or Beyonce, or Taylor Swift. The list goes on!” READ MORE: Paul McCartney’s Most Embarrassing Early Mome...

Paul McCartney has broken a lot of records in his six-decade career, and he recently did it again, becoming the first billionaire musician in the U.K. McCartney’s name appeared in the 2024 edition of The Sunday Times Rich List, which placed him at number 165 alongside his wife, Nancy. According to the list, the Beatles legend’s net worth is a whopping £1billion, which equates to approximately $1.27 billion. The list also noted that McCartney’s wealth has increased by £50 million in the last year alone, possibly due to things like the release of the Beatles “final” song, “Now and Then,” in 2023...

Let It Be director Michael Lindsay-Hogg said a famous spat between Paul McCartney and George Harrison captured in the 1970 film about the making of the Beatles‘ final album was no big deal. “Nothing was going to be in the picture that they didn’t want,” Lindsay-Hogg told Grammy.com. “They never commented on that. They took that exchange as like many other exchanges they’d had over the years … but, of course, since they’d broken up a month before [the film’s release], everyone was looking for little bits of sharp metal on the sand to think why they’d broken up.” During the often tumultuous reco...

Actor Alec Baldwin was once reduced to yelling an obscenity at his friend Paul McCartney. “I used to take a yoga class with [Saturday Night Live creator and producer] Lorne [Michaels]; John Eastman, who’s Paul’s brother-in-law; John Alexander, the painter – Lorne and I, there were five of us,” Baldwin said on the Our Way with Paul Anka and Skip Bronson podcast. “We would take a yoga class. We called ourselves the ‘Yoga Boys.'” There was one problem: “The only one who was really adept at yoga was McCartney. He would do a handstand or a headstand and he had the most lithe body you’ve ever seen –...

Paul McCartney and Wings‘ long-bootlegged One Hand Clapping album will finally get an official release. The sessions were recorded in August 1974 at Abbey Road Studios when the band went into the venue to lay down some music for a documentary and a possible live record. The 55-minute show aired later that year but has been rarely seen since then. The accompanying record, however, has remained a favorite bootleg album for decades. The official release will arrive on June 14. Paul and Linda McCartney were joined by Wings members Danny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton. READ MORE: The Beat...

Paul McCartney teamed up with Eagles at Thursday night’s Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett, performing “Let It Be.” McCartney noted from the stage that he’d visited Buffett during the last week of his life and played a few songs for him then. Buffett “was in a pretty bad way, but he still had that twinkle in his eye,” McCartney explained. “Tonight I thought I’d sing one of those songs.” You can view fan-filmed footage of the performance below. The concert, which took place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, also featured performances by Jon Bon Jovi (“Thank God & Jimmy Buffet...

Paul McCartney handled the guitar solos on some of the Beatles‘ most memorable tracks, including “Drive My Car,” “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” “Helter Skelter” and “Taxman.” But he wasn’t always so confident about his playing – in particular during their initial performances. “We had this gig and it was like, the first thing I ever played, and I was lead guitar player,” McCartney says on the Paul McCartney: A Life in Lyrics podcast. Beatles bandmate “John [Lennon] was rhythm, and I had a solo and I totally froze. [I] could not move my fingers. … It was like, just so embarrassing. My lead guitar play...
