An explosion at an armaments factory in Poland killed one and injured several, local media reported on Monday. The explosion started a fire and killed a 59-year-old worker at the Mesko weapon factory in the Polish city of Skarżysko-Kamienna. Another employee was hospitalised after inhaling smoke, though his condition is not life-threatening, local authorities said. “We had an explosion at the rocket fuel centre, which was put into operation a few years ago,” said the plant’s chairwoman Elżbieta Śreniawska. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation. The factory — owned by the s...

Early projections of the European election results in Poland show that Tusk's Civic Coalition is set to keep its lead over its rival Law and Justice or PiS party, mimicking national election results in December. An Ipsos exit poll published by Polish television channel TVN24 showed that with 38% of the vote, Tusk's political alliance should be able to delegate around 21 MEPs to the new European Parliament. The right-wing populist PiS came in second place with a predicted result of 33.9%. The European election vote in Poland has largely been framed as a test for Tusk's party, who have come out ...

The leader of the Polish right-wing populist Law and Justice party, or PiS, Jarosław Kaczyński, expressed his disapproval of the European Union right after he cast his vote in Warsaw on Sunday. In an impromptu press conference at the 333 polling station in the capital, he stated that although he believed that belonging to the EU is important to the eastern European country of 36.8 million, the bloc "should be a union of equal states". "It is important for us for economic reasons, but it cannot be an attempt to rebuild Franco-German imperialism." Kaczyński, 74, has been a mainstay of Polish pol...

The deep rift between the right and the centre-right in Poland could hinder the making of an overarching EU conservative coalition despite overwhelming popular support for Polish conservatives, according to the Euronews Polls Centre's analysts. The Euronews Superpoll examining odds ahead of the 6-9 June European elections predicts a neck-to-neck race between the nationalist right-wing Law and Justice or PiS party chaired by Jarosław Kaczyński and the moderate conservatives of Civic Coalition (Koalicja Obywatelska, KO), the current ruling party in Poland. According to the most recent projection...

Poland has officially exited Article 7, the European Union's exceptional mechanism to rein in countries that openly defy the bloc's fundamental values. The decision, previewed earlier this month and formalised on Wednesday morning, ends a long-running saga that dates back to December 2017 when the European Commission triggered Article 7 — known as the "nuclear option" because it can lead to the suspension of voting rights — over Poland's systematic erosion of judicial independence. The clash stemmed from the sweeping reforms introduced by the hard-right Law and Justice (PiS) party, which rearr...

Defence officials in Poland have presented a plan to strengthen security on the country's border with Belarus. The plan involves beefing up anti-drone surveillance and on-ground military defence through a system of fortifications and barriers along about 700 kilometres of its eastern border with the Russian ally. Poland, which supports Ukraine against Moscow's full-scale invasion, is being targeted by hostile actions from Russia and Belarus, according to Warsaw. They include cyberattacks, attempted arson and pushing migrants illegally across the border, which officials describe as intended to ...

Sikorski said that “there were sabotage groups in Europe inspired and paid for by the Russian services.” The news comes days after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday the re-establi...

The tortuous and often explosive undertaking came to an end on Tuesday morning, as member states gathered to give the very final green light to the five regulations that make up the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, an all-encompassing overhaul that seeks to ensure all countries, regardless of location, shoulder their fair share. Among other things, the New Pact envisions stricter rules to expand the screening of applicants, carry out health and security checks, speed up examination procedures and provide counselling free of charge. Its main novelty is a system of "mandatory solidarity" that w...
