  • Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey resumes calling Chicago a ‘hellhole’ at state fair’s GOP day

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Darren Bailey, who had tempered his criticism of Chicago since winning the Republican nomination for governor, returned to calling the state’s largest city a crime-ridden “hellhole” Thursday in playing to a downstate crowd during the GOP’s annual day at the Illinois State Fair. “Our legislators are going soft on criminals to the point where they’ve made Chicago a hellhole, friends,” Bailey, who is challenging first-term Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, told an audience of several hundred people at the director’s lawn at the state fairgrounds. “Chicago, that once great city, w...

NEW YORK — The Trump Organization’s long-serving financial gatekeeper pleaded guilty to 15 felonies Thursday and directly implicated former President Donald Trump’s family real estate business in a multiyear criminal tax fraud scheme. Allen Weisselberg admitted to receiving more than $1.7 million in off-the-books perks while chief financial officer of the Trump Organization on top of his hefty salary, defrauding the taxpayer and Uncle Sam by disguising the fringe benefits as work expenses. • Operations resume at San Diego International Airport after man breaches security, flights grounded

SAN DIEGO — Authorities evacuated Terminal 2 at the San Diego International Airport and grounded planes there for more than two hours Thursday after a man bypassed a luggage security screening, officials said. The security breach happened about 12:25 p.m., according to the Transportation Security Administration. Officials said the man went through the airport's baggage screening process, but then a TSA officer identified a bag that required additional inspection. This kind of screening can happen if a TSA officer wants to take a closer look after spotting something on the luggage X-ray screen....

  • If Kansas counties underestimated abortion recount cost, they must pay the difference

Taxpayer dollars will likely be spent on the voter-imposed recount of Kansas’ landslide abortion rights ballot initiative. Wichita anti-abortion activist Mark Gietzen and Colby election denier Melissa Leavitt put up a roughly $120,000 bond Monday to cover the cost of a full hand recount in nine of Kansas’ 105 counties. The cost was established by estimates provided by county election offices toKansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab’s office. If a county exceeds its estimate, however, the county government will be responsible for covering the difference. Two of the nine counties say they have a...

  • Murder trial for ex-Fort Worth police officer who killed Atatiana Jefferson rescheduled after many delays

FORT WORTH, Texas — The trial for a former Fort Worth police officer who shot and killed a woman in her home has been scheduled for December after being postponed and rescheduled multiple times. Aaron Dean shot Atatiana Jefferson inside her Fort Worth home in October 2019. He is charged with murder. The judge who was initially assigned to oversee the trial, Judge David Hagerman, was removed from the case in June. Dean’s defense team argued that Hagerman’s impartiality in the case might reasonably be questioned and that he holds a personal bias or prejudice against Dean attorney Bob Gill. Retir...

  • Commentary: One year after messy withdrawal, America shuns Afghanistan and its women

America’s exit from Afghanistan was going to come eventually. Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump both declared their intentions to extricate the U.S. from its “forever war.” The American public by and large ratified this position. In the end, though, both former presidents balked when confronted by pushback from the Pentagon. Then, in April 2021, President Joe Biden declared that he was the fourth president to preside over the war in Afghanistan, and refused to “pass this responsibility on to a fifth.” Unfortunately for Biden, his execution of the withdrawal, which wrapped up at the end ...

  • Editorial: After a year under Taliban rule, Afghans feel the price of peace.

Afghanistan today under Taliban rule virtually mirrors what the country was like before the American invasion in October 2001. Girls cannot attend secondary school. Once again, women no longer work as lawyers, judges or police officers. Men must wear beards and traditional Afghan garb. As it was before, morality police scan streetscapes to make sure women are in burqas and accompanied by a male relative. The country has been firewalled from any Western influence. Movies, foreign broadcasts and music have all disappeared. A year after the Taliban retook Kabul and imposed its oppressive brand of...

  • Trump ruffles feathers by endorsing Democrats Dan Goldman, Carolyn Maloney in key NYC congressional races

NEW YORK — Though he’s not on Twitter anymore, former President Donald Trump still knows how to troll. The twice-impeached former president ruffled political feathers in his native New York City late Wednesday by offering head-scratching endorsements of Dan Goldman and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., in their respective Democratic congressional races. Goldman, who’s running for the vacant 10th Congressional District in next Tuesday’s primary and served as the lead Democratic counsel during Trump’s first impeachment, is “honorable, fair, and highly intelligent,” the ex-president wrote in a post o...
