For seven decades, Palestinian children have been born and raised as refugees. While many 18-year-olds in Europe are finishing their secondary studies and heading off to university, 18-year-olds in Gaza have lived through six different wars (2008-2009, 2012, 2014, 2021, 2022, and 2023). Since October, schools in Gaza have been used as shelters to house the displaced, and even many of those have been targeted by bombardment. A payment card exclusively for asylum-seekers has been introduced in Germany, following the recent parliamentary approval of a new rule. Under the new regulation, migrants are issued a card to access their benefits, which can be used at local stores and for services, but it limits their cash withdrawals and bans international money transfers. The aim is to prevent migrants from sending money to family and friends abroad, or to smugglers. In Eichsfeld, Thuringia, 45-year-old Laca from Albania and her family were among the first in Germany to receive half of their government benefits as cashless...

Most refugees who arrived in Germany thanks to Angela Merkel's "Open Door" policy have now found work, according to a recent study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). For the cohort who arrived in 2015, the employment rate in 2022 was 64%, compared with 77% for the wider German population. Some 90% of employees in this group were subject to social security contributions, claimed IAB, and the median gross hourly wage for 2015 arrivals was €13.70. This is above the low-wage threshold of €12.50, despite the fact that the mean age of refugees is much lower than the national average. "D...

European Union auditors said on Wednesday that they are unable to establish whether some of the billions of euros the bloc has given to Turkey to help it cope with Syrian refugees is actually having any impact. Turkey in turn committed to stop migrants leaving its territory for Europe. In March 2016, a month after the deal came into effect, Turkey's government said the number of migrants crossing illegally into Greece ha...
