A detailed analysis of ancient Antarctic ice has revealed that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are rising 10 times faster than at any point in the past 50,000 years. Researchers at Oregon State University in the US and the University of St Andrews in Scotland looked at samples of ice collected by drilling cores up to 3.2km deep. Ice has built up in the Antarctic over hundreds of thousands of years and includes atmospheric gasses trapped in air bubbles inside of this ice. Scientists look for trace elements in samples of this ice to build a record of what the climate was like in the past...

With the European elections approaching, scientists from across the European Union are uniting for the first time to call for increased science funding from their candidates. "It is essential to preserve the collaborative, open and international nature of scientific work," said the 27 EU science academies in a statement presented last week in Brussels, Belgium. "At least 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in research and education is the way of saying that we cannot limit ourselves to following emergencies, but that we work together to build a solid Europe, necessary for a truly uncertain worl...

Big banks have financed fossil fuels with nearly $7 trillion (€6.5 trillion) since the Paris Agreement, a new report has found. The 15th annual Banking on Climate Chaos (BOCC) report looked at how the top 60 private banks in the world are underwriting and lending to over 4,200 fossil fuel firms, and financing companies causing the degradation of the Amazon and Arctic. Their research found that, since the Paris Agreement to limit global warming was signed in 2016, these banks have financed fossil fuels with $6.9 trillion (€6.4 trillion). The report says $3.3 trillion (€3 trillion) - almost half...

Scientists studying the sperm whales that live around the Caribbean island of Dominica have described the basic elements of how they might be talking to each other for the first time. They hope the research could one day help better protect them. Like many whales and dolphins, sperm whales are highly social mammals and communicate by squeezing air through their respiratory systems to make strings of rapid clicks that can sound like an extremely loud zipper underwater. The clicks are also used as a form of echolocation to help them track their prey. Scientists have been trying for decades to un...

Airlines have hit back against EU plans to monitor contrails from aircraft, claiming too little is known about their climate impact to regulate them. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says it’s too soon to implement regulations as there are still “gaps” in scientific knowledge about their impact. New EU regulations will see airlines required to measure and report non-CO2 emissions from flights from January 2025. That would include contrails, nitrogen oxides and sulphur. Contrails or condensation trails are created when ice crystals form around tiny particles of carbon emitted ...

From lagers and blonds to lambics, there is a wide range of different beers to choose from. But could artificial intelligence (AI) help predict if a specific beer recipe will be appreciated by consumers before they even try it? A team of scientists at KU Leuven, a university in Belgium, say that it can. The researchers gathered a trained tasting panel of 16 people and asked them to try 250 commercial beers of 22 different styles such as lagers, blonds, and stouts. Participants rated the beverages on 50 attributes, including different hop, malt, and yeast flavours, off-flavours and spices. Rese...

American aerospace company Stratolaunch hailed the first powered test flight of a new unmanned craft for hypersonic research on Saturday a success. Hypersonic describes flights at speeds of at least Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. Chief Executive Officer Zachary Krevor said in a statement that the Talon-A-1 vehicle "reached high supersonic speeds approaching Mach 5 and collected a great amount of data at an incredible value to our customers". Paris to New York in 1.5 hours: The hydrogen jet looking to usher in hypersonic air travelKrevor said he could not release the specific altitud...
