The Scheldt Estuary in Flanders has long been on the flooding frontline. Its low-lying landscape and open connection to the sea make it highly vulnerable to storm surges. When the sea level rises abnormally due to strong winds and low atmospheric pressure, this weather phenomenon can lead to significant flooding during high tide. “When there is a high tide in combination with a storm on the sea, and if the storm and the wind are blowing from the northwest, then it's actually pushing the water into the estuary, so we need protection,” says Elias Verbanck, a Project Manager at the LIFE SPARC pro...

Joni Vorpsi was protesting outside the Albanian Parliament when he heard the draft law he was there to stop had passed. Law 21/2024, as it’s officially known, is a nightmare for environmentalists as it enables the construction of five-star mega resorts anywhere in the country - including protected natural areas. Its approval came in February, three days after Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner went public with his plans to create two resorts by the Vjosa River delta, an ecologically priceless wetland. “It was devastating,” says Vorpsi, a project manager at the Protection and Preservation ...

Officials have said London’s flood defence walls will need to be half a metre higher in the future to protect against climate change. The announcement came as they marked the 40th anniversary of the Thames Barrier, which defends the capital against flooding. Though initially intended to protect London until 2030, the moveable barrier and the city’s wider flood defences will function until 2070, the UK’s Environment Agency expects. But sea levels are projected to rise by around a metre by 2100 and storms are becoming increasingly intense due to climate change. This, officials have said, means g...

London’s mayor has vowed to make the notoriously polluted River Thames swimmable within a decade. It’s welcome news for Londoners looking enviously across the Channel to Paris - where authorities are racing to get the Seine clean enough for Olympic swimming events this summer. Sadiq Khan announced his “moonshot plan” to clear up the “national embarrassment” to The Sunday Times newspaper. “We won’t do this overnight,” he said. “It will take us a few years to do - but the great thing is there’s an appetite from Londoners and campaigners.” Here’s how London could reverse the fortunes of its belov...

One third of rivers across Europe breached the ‘high’ flood threshold last year, climate scientists have calculated, while 16 per cent swept past the ‘severe’ mark. From Italy to Slovenia and Greece, swollen rivers took a deadly toll throughout 2023. The year ended with major river basins such as the Rhine and Danube at record or near-record levels. This hydrological volatility is one big impact of the climate crisis on Europe, captured in extensive detail in the new State of the Climate report from the EU’s climate agency Copernicus and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). “In 2023, E...

Oil slicks in the Khabur River in Syria, a major tributary of the Euphrates, have left agriculture “almost impossible” according to one farmer in Hasakah. For the past two months, Riyadh Al-Aswad has been desperately struggling to keep his wheat crop alive long enough for the harvest season. He is not alone in his plight as hundreds of other farmers across the northeast grapple with the pollution. The oil spills, which first appeared in February, were blamed on Türkiye after its military conducted a series of airstrikes on Kurdish-affiliated oil refineries in northeastern Syria. “Since the att...

Fresh doubts have been cast on the possibility of Paris hosting Olympic swimming events in its polluted River Seine. Much excitement was generated by the announcement last year that the Seine will be open for public swimmers in 2025, after staging triathlon events this summer. But water sampling by the European arm of the Surfrider Foundation has revealed that bacteria - including “pollution of faecal origin” - remains dangerously high. “It is therefore clear that the athletes who will be taking part in the Olympic and Paralympic events planned for the Seine will be swimming in polluted water ...

Anger is rising over the dumping of untreated sewage into the UK’s rivers and seas. The situation attracted international attention at the end of March during the famous Oxford- Cambridge Boat Race. Rowers were warned about potentially dangerous E. coli bacteria in the River Thames ahead of the event. A combination of agricultural runoff and sewage spills now mean the UK is ranked among some of the worst countries in Europe for bathing water quality. Why have its rivers and seas ended up in this state? Why has sewage pollution got so bad in the UK?Many campaigners track the problem back to the...
