Social media will be banned for children under 14 in Florida. The US state is cracking down on youngsters using the likes of TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram, by making it illegal for those under 14 to have a social media account on the apps. What's more, those aged 15 and under must get their parents' permission to open an account. Governor Ron DeSantis signed the House Bill 3 (HB 3) on Monday (25.03.24), and said: "Social media harms children in a variety of ways. "HB 3 gives parents a greater ability to protect their children." The new law will come into effect form January 1, 2025....

Florida governor Ron DeSantis ended his presidential campaign and endorsed Donald Trump on Sunday. The former US president set aside months of criticism and mockery of Desantis, celebrating his onetime Republican rival as his newest supporter. DeSantis, previously seen as a threat to Trump, quit ahead of a Republican primary election in New Hampshire. He was polling in single digits. Speaking on Sunday night, Trump praised DeSantis without calling him “DeSantimonious” or “DeSanctus,” putting an end to perhaps the most bitter rivalry of the Republicans' 2024 campaign. “I just want to thank Ron ...

Pink is planning to distribute 2,000 free copies of banned books at her upcoming Florida gig. The outspoken Grammy-winner, 44, who has been blisteringly honest about everything from her drugs past to her support for women’s access to abortions, said she will hand out tomes barred in the state’s schools when she plays the state this week. Pink said: “Books have held a special joy for me from the time I was a child. That’s why I am unwilling to stand by and watch while books are banned by schools." Florida has become the centre of the book-banning debate and Pink’s plan has been formed with the ...

Former President Donald Trump attacked Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) in anticipation of her endorsement of Florida Gov. Ron Desantis (R) in the 2024 election. Reynolds has appeared frequently in public with DeSantis on his campaign trail. Reynolds has introduced DeSantis at events in Iowa, and they watched a football game between rival schools, the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, alongside one another in September. On Monday, Reynolds will formally endorse DeSantis at a rally in Des Moines. On Sunday night, Trump declared via Truth Social, “If and when Kim Reynolds of Iowa endorses ...

On Sunday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was heckled and booed as he spoke at a vigil for the victims of the Jacksonville shooting at a Dollar General store where a 21-year-old white gunman shot and killed three black people. DeSantis said Florida intended to allocate funds to improve security at Edward Waters University, the historically black college that the gunman went to before the shooting but left without being confronted. DeSantis said, “We are not going to allow these institutions to be targeted by people.” But the heckling continued, leading a councilwoman to tell the audience to put...

Three years after the adoption of Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking Standards, a new state law championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), has caused some school districts to remove many written works deemed sexually explicit. Hillsborough County took this step more recently by telling teachers that they were only allowed to assign excerpts of Romeo & Juliet, rather than the entire play. Several of Shakespeare’s works involve vulgar puns and innuendos, and in Romeo & Juliet specifically, it is suggested that the two protagonists have premarital sex. Copies of Shakespeare’s works sti...

Donald Trump has bragged he has a “close to 100 per cent” chance of beating Joe Biden if he faces him in the 2024 US presidential election. The 77-year-old – who is facing a maximum of 55 years in prison if found guilty of the four criminal charges against him related to the 6 January Capitol riot and his alleged plot to stay in power – also mocked his closest rival for the Republican nomination Ron DeSantis, who he is leading in the polls by more than 40 points. The former reality TV star also told The Sunday Times at the Iowa State Fair on Saturday (12.08.23) he has a “close to 100 per cent”...

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) defended Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Alabama) blockade of hundreds of military promotions in protest to a Defense Department policy on abortion. Tuberville has been holding up the standard military confirmation process since May. The senator is opposing a policy that allows service members to request leave for “non-covered reproductive health services,” which include abortions and in-vitro fertilization. Though some hard-right GOP members have voiced support for Tuberville, many centrist Republicans have pleaded for him to stand down. Major branches of the U.S. mil...
