The proposal on the table breaks a long-held taboo in Brussels as Russian gas has been until now completely spared from any restrictions, despite repeated calls from Poland, the Baltics, the Nordics and, most passionately, Ukraine. But the plan, designed by the European Commission, falls short of an all-out import ban, as the bloc previously did with coal and seaborne oil. Instead, it aims to prohibit trans-shipments of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), meaning the practice of re-exporting LNG that arrives at EU ports to other countries. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA...

EU diplomats agreed Wednesday to use income from frozen Russian state assets to aid Ukraine – paving the way for the war-torn country to get around €3 bn for arms purchases and reconstruction before the summer. Since the full-scale invasion of 2022, €210 billion in assets of the Moscow central bank have sat frozen within the bloc – chiefly at the Euroclear depositary in Belgium. The deal was agreed “in principle” at a regular meeting of national representatives, according to a tweet by Belgium, currently chairing talks in the European Council. Brussels has long touted using the interest from t...

In what would be the first move of its kind, the EU may be considering sanctions against the Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector. As part of the 14th round of sanctions against Russia by the EU, these new measures would target the re-export of Russian LNG from EU countries. Such a move would also crack down on the use of any EU facilities including the use of ports to ship Russian LNG, as well as any other goods which are seen to be directly contributing to Russia's continued battle in Ukraine. Not only that, but it would also compel EU companies and operators to be more careful of any ...

EU sanctions on Russian oligarchs, designed to put pressure on Vladmir Putin, are facing a host of legal woes – but don’t represent a strategic setback, Euronews has been told. European courts have repeatedly struck down travel bans and asset freezes imposed on those deemed to be in Putin’s inner circle – most recently for bankers Mikhail Fridman and Petr Aven. But that may be par for the course, as the bloc struggles to impose record-breaking measures as economic retaliation for the Ukraine war, experts have said. The EU Council, which groups member states, says it has imposed Ukraine-linked ...

Aluminium prices rocketed to a record level following the UK and the US's decision to ban the trade of Russian metals to "prevent the Kremlin funnelling more cash into its war machine". At one stage in early morning trading, aluminium was up more than 9% on the London Metal Exchange (LME), the biggest rise seen since trading started in 1987. Nickel prices also rose, at one stage gaining more than 8%. Both metal prices later fell back. Hopes ban will tighten Russia's purse for war financingThe UK and US took the decision at the weekend to put sanctions in place against Russia on new production ...

The US and UK have announced restrictions on the trade of Russian-origin metals – including aluminium, copper and nickel – on global metal exchanges and in derivatives trading. The ban could hit Russia hard as it is a key export of metals, though critics doubt the effectiveness of the move. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the prohibitions would "target" Russian revenue earned in the ongoing war against Ukraine. “By taking this action in a targeted and responsible manner, we will reduce Russia’s earnings while protecting our partners and allies from unwanted spill-over effects," she said...

MEPs have adopted a package of gas and electricity market reforms intended to bolster energy security, protect vulnerable consumers from wild price fluctuations as seen during the 2022 energy crisis, and create a new market for hydrogen, as well as allowing individual countries to restrict imports of Russian gas – with a more complete ban on the cards due to incoming restrictions imports with excessive upstream methane leakage. With broad cross-party support for a political deal struck with EU governments in December, the European Parliament has approved measures such as promoting the producti...

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has again taken to EU courts to challenge sanctions imposed against him in retaliation for the Ukraine war, according to legal documents published today (8 April). Abramovich faced an asset freeze and EU travel ban shortly after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Parallel measures imposed by the UK have already forced Abramovich to sell his ownership of Chelsea football club, and the EU’s General Court last December said his involvement with steel company Evraz justified the restrictive measures. The EU has sanctioned around 2,000 peo...

Last year was marked by widespread optimism for the Ukrainian war effort, while this year is the exact opposite, as dark pessimism looms over the information landscape. As some believe, both views were - and are - exaggerated. Judging by the current trend of the war, Russia might have gained the upper hand. While this general trend may be reversed by re-establishing US aid to Ukraine, drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and their economic impact have become one of the more successful Ukrainian campaigns. As the war in Ukraine continues past the two-year mark, the intensity of the armed con...

EU sanctions imposed on Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin have been quashed by the EU courts in a judgment released today (20 March). In March 2022, Mazepin was barred from entering the EU and had funds frozen in retaliation for Russia’s war in Ukraine. His team, Haas, also promptly canceled his driving contract, as well as its sponsorship deal with Uralkali, a Russian fertiliser company owned by Mazepin’s oligarch father Dmitry. “The association between Mr Nikita Mazepin and his father is in no way established from an economic or capital perspective” by EU legislators, the EU’s General Court sa...
