Construction on a large new industrial and residential development project in Berlin, dubbed Siemensstadt Square, began on Tuesday with a groundbreaking ceremony featuring German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The new, approximately 76-hectare urban quarter is to be built by 2035 on the historic former industrial site of German engineering giant Siemens in the western Berlin district of Spandau. Siemens was founded in Berlin, and its historical production facilities were located in the area, long known as Siemensstadt (Siemens City). After World War II, Siemens moved the company headquarters and much...

German state-owned railway Deutsche Bahn will have to wait longer for further next-generation 3neo ICE high-speed trains because of production delays at manufacturer Siemens. Siemens said on Thursday that there were quality defects in some weld seams in parts provided by a subcontractor which were discovered during a routine internal inspection. "Siemens Mobility is in close contact with Deutsche Bahn and the subcontractor and is working hard to resolve the issue," a spokesman said on Thursday. "All trains that have already been delivered are not affected and can be used safely," the Siemens s...

Siemens, one of the largest manufacturing companies in Europe, saw its sales remain at €19 billion (about $21 billion) in the last quarter, and profits fall by 38% to €2.2 billion. Announcing the figures on Thursday, the company said the fall in profits was largely due to the fact that it had recorded a billion-euro profit in the same quarter of the previous year as a result of the rising value of its stake in Siemens Energy. The Digital Industries (DI) division, which has performed particularly well in recent years but is now recording significant declines in sales and earnings, is currently ...

German engineering giant Siemens is to equip the entire suburban rail network in Copenhagen with autonomous driving technology for trains. The German company announced a major order on Monday for the upgrading of 170 kilometres of track and the delivery of the necessary technology for 226 new trains. The trains themselves are not part of the current order. Fully automated operation should be possible by 2033, said Siemens Mobility chief executive Michael Peter. "This will make the Copenhagen network the world's largest automated urban rail network," he said. The current agreement, worth €270 m...

German engineering group Siemens said on Wednesday it would open a new research and innovation centre on a satellite campus of the Technical University of Munich. In the first phase of the project, around 450 Siemens employees will work alongside some 150 scientists from the university, the company said. A second phase with a further 630 researchers and patent experts is due to be put into operation at the site in Garching, north of Munich, in 2027. Siemens is investing a total of around €100 million ($106 million) in the project. The new site will be used for centralised research across the i...
