A map in a new study by Merchoid shows the most popular dad rock band in each U.S. state. When you think of dad rock, which bands come to mind? For many, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Van Halen and other related big names from the ’70s and ’80s are likely the answer. And while some of those still reign in many locations as the ultimate dad rock groups, Merchoid’s map is guaranteed to make you feel old, as acts from the ’90s and 2000s are apparently the supreme favorites of today’s fathers. To gather the findings, Merchoid surveyed 3,000 Americans about which ba...

Russia’s war in Ukraine has emitted roughly 175 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 24 months, according to the most comprehensive such study of any war to date. This is the equivalent of the annual use of 90 million cars and could cost Russia nearly €30 billion in reparations for the climate damage it has caused. The report comes from the Initiative on Greenhouse Gas Accounting of War (IGGAW) which has been developing new methodologies to measure this ‘conflict carbon’. The initiative’s series of assessments is the first to map the emissions of any war on such a comprehensive scale. Where doe...

A new study by Betway shows which U.S. states have the “rowdiest” concert crowds, and which behaviors at live shows people find to be most annoying. The company surveyed 2,057 Americans about which behaviors at concerts irritate them the most, and used the responses to uncover which states have the most aggressive audiences, and which have the friendliest. The states were ranked based on the average number of negative behaviors people reported experiencing at shows. Wisconsin was ranked the state with the highest average number of rowdy behaviors, with a score of 13.1. Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mas...

For decades, concerns about automobile pollution have focused on what comes out of the tailpipe. Now, researchers and regulators say, we need to pay more attention to toxic emissions from tires as vehicles roll down the road. At the top of the list of worries is a chemical called 6PPD, which is added to rubber tires to help them last longer. When tires wear on pavement, 6PPD is released. It reacts with ozone to become a different chemical, 6PPD-q, which can be extremely toxic — so much so that it has been linked to repeated fish kills in Washington state. The trouble with tires doesn’t stop th...

Climate change is making giant heat waves crawl slower across the globe - and they are baking more people for a longer time with higher temperatures over larger areas, a new study has found. Since 1979, global heat waves are moving 20 per cent more slowly - meaning more people stay hot longer - and they are happening 67 per cent more often, according to a study in Friday's Science Advances. Scientists also found the highest temperatures in the heat waves are warmer than 40 years ago and the area under a heat dome is larger. Studies have shown heat waves worsening before - but this one is more ...

Washington (AFP) - Parents often worry about the harmful impacts of video games on their children, from mental health and social problems to missing out on exercise. But a large new US study published in JAMA Network Open on Monday indicates there may also be cognitive benefits associated with the popular pastime. Lead author Bader Chaarani, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont, told AFP he was naturally drawn to the topic as a keen gamer himself with expertise in neuroimagery. Prior research had focused on detrimental effects, linking gaming with depression and i...
