Kenyan President William Ruto said on Wednesday that he won't sign into law a controversial finance bill proposing new taxes - just one day after protests in the country turned deadly. In the biggest assault on Kenya’s government in decades, the incident saw several people shot dead and buildings on fire. The government defended the bill- which includes several tax hikes- by saying it was necessary to raise funds to pay off debt. Ordinary Kenyans said the bill would cause economic pain as millions struggle to get by. The chaos on Tuesday led the government to deploy the military, with Ruto cal...

Several people were killed when thousands of protesters stormed Kenya’s parliament Tuesday to protest against government tax proposals. Part of the building was burned, sending lawmakers fleeing and drawing fire from police amid unrest that the president vowed to quash. It was the most direct assault on the government in decades. At least three bodies were seen outside the complex where police had opened fire, and medical workers reported five people killed. Clashes spread to other cities. There was no immediate word on arrests. “Today’s events mark a critical turning point on how we respond t...

Taxes are an inevitable, if somewhat unwanted part of most of our lives. Some of the most common taxes include income tax, dividend taxes, property taxes and sales taxes, amongst others. Several countries also levy taxes on things such as inheritance, long-term and short-term capital gains, as well as excise duties and insurance premiums. However, would you pay a junk food tax? What about a baby name tax? Or a tax on the number of times you flush the toilet? These and several more odd taxes might make you pause and draw the purse strings tight again. Below are some of the strangest taxes in th...

The United Arab Emirates has emerged as this year's top destination for attracting the most millionaires, according to a report from Henley Private Wealth Management into millionaire migration trends for 2024. The nation's zero rate of income tax, along with its luxury lifestyle and golden visa programme, is set to attract 6,700 new millionaires this year alone. While the number of Russians moving to the UAE has slowed recently, this has partially been offset by an increasing number of European and British immigrants. The number of millionaires living in the UAE's largest city, Dubai, has rise...

"Nothing is certain except death and taxes," American statesman Benjamin Franklin told scientist Jean-Baptiste Le Roy back in 1789. While both dying and filling the state coffers are, to varying extents, pretty unavoidable, a "tax on death" is much less of a foregone conclusion. Inheritance tax is considered to be the first modern tax to have spread widely. By the early 20th century, more than 60 countries had introduced it, generally to raise cash for wars or to weather lengthy recessions. Inheritance tax was once out of favourTowards the end of the century, the levy had fallen out of favour....

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden publicly released their 2023 tax return on Monday, carrying on a tradition of transparency temporarily interrupted under predecessor Donald Trump. The annual, unwritten custom is designed to build trust in the White House. Other politicians as well as candidates often also take part. The Bidens earned $619,976 in 2023, most of which was derived from the president's $400,000 salary and Jill Biden's $85,985 compensation for her teaching job at a college in nearby Virginia. That number was up from the $579,514 the couple earned i...

Charities Avaaz, WeMove and Oxfam were joined by several young activists to highlight wealth inequality outside the European Parliament in Brussels. Protesters used an inflatable jet in order to draw attention to the lavish lifestyles of the super-rich.
