Pete Townshend says he’d never been happy with the 1979 movie version of Quadrophenia. The Who guitarist explained that was one of the reasons why he’d developed a ballet version of the storyline, which was first exposed via the 1973 album. “I was never happy with the film,” Townshend told NME in a recent interview. “I felt the film was lazy. It was not based on my story and it didn’t include much of my music. So I thought here was an opportunity to do something that honours the music, but also possibly takes it into a new era, a new place.” READ MORE: When the Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’ Movie Premi...

Pete Townshend said the Who didn’t make money from most of their albums as a result of theft by their managers, especially during their first eight years of making records. The guitarist also recalled one of his final meetings with Jimi Hendrix, when they talked about being the victims of illegal activities. In a recent interview with NME, Townshend was asked if it made financial sense for established bands to record new albums. “It’s never been about the money,” he replied with a laugh. Pete Townshend has announced the premiere of Quadrophenia: A Mod Ballet, based on the Who’s classic 1973 album. The production will open in the U.K. in May 2025, following years of development after the guitarist’s wife, Rachel Fuller, created an orchestral version of the music, which was recorded in 2016. The Sadler’s Wells theater company said in a statement: “Quadrophenia defined a generation and in 1979 inspired the cult classic feature film of the same name. Now it’s back – this time as an explosive dance production… with a cast of exceptional dancers, introducing new audiences to trouble...

Roger Daltrey kicked off his solo U.S. tour on Monday night in Glenside, Pennsylvania. The singer performed a mix of Who classics like “Who Are You,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and more, plus covers of Leo Sayer, Taj Mahal and Creedence Clearwater Revival. “Won’t Get Fooled Again” required an explanation from Daltrey, who took a moment to note why he no longer performs the famous rock ‘n’ roll scream in the song. “It’s brutal let me tell you, it’s a brutal thing to do. I mean, I’ve really wrecked my voice so many times,” he said. “I’ve retired from the scream, but I’m sti...

The Who’s Roger Daltrey has spotted a trend among most major artists, and he doesn’t like it one bit. During a recent conversation with Billboard, the legendary rocker condemned acts who publicly share their set lists. “Too many people reveal songs,” Daltrey declared. “There’s no surprises left with concerts these days, ’cause everybody wants to see the set list.” Daltrey’s reasoning is simple: If fans go online and lookup an artist’s typical set list, they’ll go into a concert with preconceived expectations on what they’ll hear. Pete Townshend is feeling more like a substitute musician in the Who these days. “It’s a group of musicians that Roger [Daltrey] has chosen,” the guitarist told Mojoin May [via rockcelebrities.net]. “I have not chosen any of the musicians I tour with – not even [drummer] Zak [Starkey]. When Roger brings me onstage I am filling the shoes of a guy called Frank Simes, who Roger tours with solo, and who is a guitar player and musical director.” But, he clarified, that doesn’t mean he’s unwilling to participate. Roger Daltrey is gearing up for an intimate U.S. summer tour that kicks off on June 10. And while the sets will include plenty of classic Who material, don’t expect to hear Daltrey to deliver the famous scream in “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” “I’m not gonna do the scream,” Daltrey insisted during a recent conversation with Billboard. “I’m gonna get the fucking audience to do the scream. I’ve done that scream for 55 years, and I’ve had enough of it. I don’t even want to try it now; it’s brutal on the vocal cords. They can do the scream, and I’ll do everything else. I’m more into singing these days....

A previously unreleased version of the Who‘s classic “I Can’t Explain” by David Bowie has been unveiled ahead of the June 14 release of the upcoming Bowie box Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! The song, recorded in 1972 during the sessions for Bowie’s star-making The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album, is a relatively faithful cover of the Who’s 1964 single, the band’s first released under that name (their debut, “Zoot Suit,” was recorded as the High Numbers). Bowie later re-recorded “I Can’t Explain” for his 1973 covers album Pin Ups, but that version was slowed down and glamme...

Roger Daltrey, frontman of the Who, has addressed his mortality, weeks after his 80th birthday. The rocker, who hit the milestone on March 1, gave a long self-examination to U.K.’s The Times while explaining his decision to step down as the curator of the annual Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) charity concerts. “I have to be realistic. I’m on my way out,” the legendary singer wrote. “The average life expectancy is 83 and with a bit of luck I’ll make that, but we need someone else to drive things.” Daltrey further detailed the nervousness he felt before recent shows, admitting concerns “about how ma...

Roger Daltrey has "thought about" joining Dignitas and would rather die than have treatment if he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The Who frontman stressed he isn't currently ill but at the age of 79, mortality has been on his mind and if he felt he was becoming a "burden" to his loved ones, he'd take steps to end his life. Speaking after Dame Esther Rantzen - who has stage 4 lung cancer - revealed she has joined assisted dying organisation Dignitas, he told The Times newspaper: “I think she is incredibly brave to raise the subject and I’m kind of there too, so I have thought about it." As...
