Airlines should consider restricting access to alcohol on long haul flights to protect the heart health of their passengers, academics have said. Many holiday goers will celebrate jetting off on their travels with an alcoholic beverage and some of these may have a doze on a plane. But a small study has found that the combination of in-flight alcohol and cabin pressure at cruising altitude may put strain on sleeping passengers’ hearts. The combination appears to lower blood oxygen and increase heart rate, even among younger adults. “The on board consumption of alcohol is an underestimated healt...

Homeless people in Edinburgh are being boarded out of town to make room for Swifties packing the Scottish city to see Taylor Swift perform three shows from June 7 to 9. Housing charity Shelter Scotland told the BBC that people in need of shelter are being shipped out to neighbouring cities because of stiff competition for hotel rooms From June 7-9, when the “Cruel Summer” singer performs at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium. Philadelphia (tca/dpa) — Dear reader: How far would you travel for Taylor Swift? For some Philadelphia-area Swifties, the answer is to Lincoln Financial Field and back. For others, it’s over 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe to see Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour for a second, third, or even fourth time. Swift last performed in Philly in May 2023, when the Eras Tour took over the Linc for three nights in a row and the Reading-born superstar declared her (now fickle) allegiance to the Philadelphia Eagles. Since then, the tour has crisscrossed the United States, Latin America and...

Italy has introduced new rules for the use of speed cameras on its roads. The regulations stipulate a minimum distance between individual devices, and that the cameras may only be used above a certain speed, for example, only when the maximum speed is 50 kilometres per hour in urban areas. The new rules, which were published in the Official Gazette on Tuesday, also stipulate when drivers must be made aware of the speed cameras. Warnings of cameras outside built-up areas must be displayed at least 1 kilometre in advance. Speed cameras that have already been installed can be adapted to the new r...

Few of us think of sunglasses as protection against cataracts, but that's essentially what they are. Not only letting us see better against a glaring sun, they also shield us from high-intensity UV rays, which can cause a painful inflammation of the eye and increase the risk of eye diseases like cataracts later in life. However, when it comes to choosing the right sunglasses, the rule of thumb is not "the darker, the better". The colour of the lenses has nothing to do with UV protection, and optometrists say that darker shades of sunglasses can even lead to damage. Sunglasses with particularly...

With its rugged coastline and pristine natural beauty, Corsica is a jewel in the Mediterranean Sea. The French island, just a stone's throw north of Italy's Sardinia, attracts millions of tourists each year, but only very few of them ever become aware that the mafia is holding Corsica in its ironclad grip. For the locals, threats, hush money payments and fudged construction work are part of daily reality. It's also not rare for people to be killed by the mafia. Often dubbed "the island of beauty," Corsica is the region in France, excluding its overseas territories, with the highest murder rate...
