Washington (AFP) - The United States has revoked some export licenses that allowed companies such as US chip firm Qualcomm to supply Chinese tech giant Huawei, the Commerce Department confirmed on Wednesday. The move adds pressure on Huawei, which has long been caught in an intense technological rivalry between Beijing and Washington over US fears it could be used for Chinese espionage operations. It came after Republican lawmakers urged President Joe Biden's administration to block all export licenses to the company following the release of a new computer powered by a chipset by US chip giant...

Washington (AFP) - The United States has revoked certain licenses for exports to Chinese tech giant Huawei, the Commerce Department said, drawing opposition from Beijing on Wednesday. The move came after criticism last month by Republican lawmakers, who urged President Joe Biden's administration to block all export licenses to the company after it released a new laptop powered by a processor by US chip giant Intel. "We continuously assess how our controls can best protect our national security and foreign policy interests, taking into consideration a constantly changing threat environment and ...

Australia has called on the European Union to delay new deforestation regulation due to concerns regarding its impact on trade, Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said on Tuesday. The new EU regulation, set to come into force on December 30, would see a ban on the import of products such as coffee, wood and beef if forests have been cleared for their production after 2020. The aim of the import ban is to significantly reduce deforestation of rainforests worldwide, including in the Amazon region in South America. Watt said he had contacted the EU commissioner for the environment to outline Austra...

Washington (AFP) - The US trade deficit was wider than analysts anticipated in March -- hovering close to the biggest in nearly a year -- with exports and imports both declining, according to government data published Thursday. The trade gap came in at $69.4 billion, narrowing slightly from February's $69.5 billion figure -- which had been revised larger, said the Commerce Department. Analysts had expected a figure of $69.0 billion, according to Briefing.com. While consumption has helped to support US trade, economists see trade flows easing ahead with cooler global demand and growth. Elevated...

Brussels (Belgium) (AFP) - The European Union on Wednesday announced a probe into China's medical devices market, prompting an immediate accusation from Beijing that the bloc was engaging in "protectionism". Brussels suspects China is favouring its own suppliers for the procurement of medical devices. The EU's official administrative journal, announcing the probe, set out ways that could be happening, including through a "Buy China" policy. The EU also has concerns that China may have restricted imports and imposed conditions "leading to abnormally low bids that cannot be sustained by profit-...

Leaders of German automotive giant Volkswagen (VW) are expecting the next two years in the highly competitive Chinese car market to be difficult, but don't fear challenges from rival Chinese carmakers in the European market. Chinese carmakers will eventually need to invest in European production plants to build vehicles locally instead of shipping huge numbers of finished vehicles by ocean, Ralf Brandstätter, head of VW's China business, said on Wednesday in Beijing ahead of a major auto show in the Chinese capital. That would also put Chinese competitors on more equal footing with European ri...
