Few artists can look back on such a versatile musical history as Paul Weller. Now, the "Modfather" - as this Brit is known because of his huge influence on the mod scene - is releasing an album that looks back on his work over the past five decades. Fittingly titled "66", the record is being released on Friday, the day before the musician's 66th birthday. This marks his 17th solo album, and if you include the albums of his previous bands, it is even his 28th album. He has stormed to the top of the British charts with six of his solo albums in recent decades. His moody single "Rise Up Singing" ...

Berlin (dpa) — You copy and paste some text from another program into Microsoft Word, and suddenly the colour, font, size and other formattings of your text are all wrong. Whole minutes are wasted fixing it! Now, thanks to a new feature delivered by Microsoft at last, this decade-old headache should be a thing of the past as the program switches to a new default setting - "Merge Formatting." That means that any meaningful formatting from the original content (for example bold or underlined text, and list and table structure) will be kept, but it will also match the formatting of the destinatio...

Women who have an epidural during labour face a lower risk of severe complications during childbirth, according to a study. Making epidurals more widely available and providing more information to those who would benefit from one is important, researchers said. The study by the University of Glasgow and the University of Bristol involved 567,216 women who were in labour in Scottish hospitals run by the UK's National Health Service (NHS) from 2007 and 2019, and went on to give birth vaginally or by an unplanned caesarean section. Of the total, some 125,024 women had an epidural, which is admini...

Parlez-vous free jazz? In almost any other French-language city in the world, this inquiry would translate as: “Do you speak cutting-edge jazz?” But at Canada’s 44-year-old Festival International de Jazz de Montreal— better known as the Montreal Jazz Festival — the question is deceptive in several ways. A majority of the performances at this 10-day summer music marathon in the French-speaking province of Quebec’s largest city are completely free of charge. And while the 2024 lineup will feature such jazz favorites as pianist Jason Moran and saxophonists Joshua Redman, Chris Potter and Melissa ...

The stronger marijuana available nowadays means teenagers who smoke it are now 11 times likelier to develop mental health problems than those who abstain, according to a study published in the journal Psychological Medicine. "The association between cannabis and psychotic disorders may be stronger than indicated by previous research, which has relied largely on older data when cannabis was less potent than today," the researchers said, warning that teens are especially vulnerable to the effects of cannabis. From the University of Toronto, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and ICES - f...

Ireland has reopened its newest and most hotly debated landmark, a screen allowing people in New York and Dublin to see each other, after the livestream was turned off in response to individuals flashing people on the other side of the Atlantic. Less than a week after being turned on, Dublin City Council had said it was disabling the so-called "Portal" as it sought "technical solutions" to what it described as "inappropriate behaviour," which also included poeple showing hurtful images on phones. Now up and running again since Monday, apparently without reports of major incidents, the Portal c...

Vaping can trigger asthma, according to the University of Texas, which has uncovered a "significant link" between using e-cigarettes and "earlier age of asthma onset." Researchers at the university’s School of Public Health on its Houston campus found that people who reported themselves as "asthma-free" ended up increasing their risk "of developing earlier age of asthma onset by 252%" if they took up vaping. The researchers used data covering over 7000 adults and around 17,000 12 to 17-year-olds from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, described as "a national longitudinal s...

Hey, didn't I delete this photo? If you've found yourself wondering about why photos have weirdly returned from the dead on your iPhone or iPad, then Apple's latest update should be able to solve a bug for you. Apple has responded to numerous reports from users that previously deleted photos have been reappearing on their devices after they installed a recent update to iOS 17.5. Some users on social media noted that the restored photos were of an unsavoury nature, and complained that they had deliberately deleted negative memories in the hope that they would stay gone.
