If the centenary is an appropriate anniversary for assessing a book’s staying power, then it’s probably about time to acknowledge that Graham Greene was wrong. The "Brighton Rock" author made the rookie mistake of trying to look through the mists of time when he declared: “There is no novelist of [the 20th century] more likely to live than Ford Madox Ford.” But if, 100 years after its first volume was published in April 1924, you went searching for a copy of "Parade’s End" in your local bookshop, you might find yourself more unlucky than if you were looking for, say, a paperback of Greene’s "T...

It’s been a good year for series so far... True Detective: Night Country was a significant return to form for the anthology series; 3 Body Problem had a slow burn start but yielded many rewards; and The Regime is an absurd delight. I still haven’t been able to muster the emotional fortitude to watch One Day yet, considering how David Nicholls’ novel robbed me of all eye moisture. But I’ll get around to it soon. However, there is one show that drops today on Netflix which I’m giddy about: Ripley, the new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” I’ve been a fan of...

If you haven’t been watching HBO’s new series The Regime, you should be. Having premiered earlier this month and ending its 6-episode run on 7 April, this miniseries already stands alongside True Detective: Night Country (a significant return to form for the anthology series) and 3 Body Problem (a slow burn which yields so many rewards if you can get past the first two episodes) as one of the best new shows of 2024 so far. (NB: I haven’t seen One Day yet, but considering how David Nicholls’ novel left me robbed of all eye moisture, I’m waiting to be in the right frame of mind for that particul...

A new adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novella ‘The Minority Report’ is touring UK theatre, with performances in London’s Lyric Hammersmith set to start on 20 April. It’s part of a new wave of science-fiction adaptations hitting theatres despite it being a historically difficult genre to stage. ‘Minority Report’ first opened at the Nottingham Playhouse earlier this year. The 1956 novella has already been adapted multiple times, most notably with the 2002 Steven Spielberg film starring Tom Cruise. Will Netflix become the new home of live sports programming? Liu Cixin’s novel ‘The Three-Body Problem’, the first in his ‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ trilogy, was a massive hit in China after its release in 2008. The 2014 English translation turned Liu into a household name among sci-fi fans when it made him the first Asian author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015. After a failed attempt at a Chinese film adaptation and a critically acclaimed Chinese TV adaptation last year, the Netflix-produced eight-part series comes from David Benioff, Daniel Brett Weiss, and Alexander Woo.
