Michael Anthony has detailed a memorable – and bizarre – early touring experience, when he watched Ozzy Osbourne light his Black Sabbath bandmate Bill Ward on fire. It was 1978 when Van Halen, then one of rock’s fastest rising acts, was touring with Black Sabbath. “We had the best time opening up for Black Sabbath,” Anthony recalled during a recent conversation with Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk. “We came out like gangbusters every night.” By all accounts, Osbourne’s group was in rough shape at the time due to alcohol and drug abuse, but Anthony noted that the metal legends “still knew how to have f...

Jane’s Addiction was formed in 1985 by singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery. The original quartet splintered after releasing two acclaimed albums – 1988’s Nothing’s Shocking and 1990’s Ritual de lo Habitual. They reunited in 2008 for...

Jon Bon Jovi recalled the shock of Richie Sambora’s unexpected departure from Bon Jovi and said the guitarist had made “no great overtures” about returning. Sambora simply failed to show up for a show in Canada in April 2013, leaving the band to continue with Phil X in his place. In recent months Sambora has talked about the possibility of a reunion – especially if Bon Jovi’s voice issues are resolved and he’s able to tour again. The frontman recalled the unexpected lineup change in a new interview with Classic Rock. “It was a shock,” he said. “Nobody anticipated it; no one saw it coming. I ta...

In 1980, Don Henley was practically certain that Eagles would never reunite, famously telling a reporter that they would get back together “when hell freezes over.” In July of that year, the band came to a dramatic end at a show in Long Beach, California, where Don Felder and Glenn Frey butted heads so severely there was nearly a physical altercation. As Henley would succinctly put it to People in 1982: “1980 was a terrible year.” But over a decade later, the mood started to shift. In 1993, an Eagles tribute album, Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles, was released, featuring covers performe...

The summer of 1984 delivered something for everybody, as an array of timeless tracks filled the airwaves. Glam metal’s invasion was in full swing at the time, helping acts like Ratt, Night Ranger and Twister Sister score their breakthrough hits. Of course, the biggest band on the planet at the time was Van Halen, and the group continued its dominance by releasing one of their most popular singles in the summer of ‘84. Also ruling over pop-culture at the time was Prince. The Purple One was everywhere thanks to his masterpiece album (and accompanying film) Purple Rain. Prince’s impact was even f...

The Black Keys drew criticism from some fans after canceling their American arena tour without notice. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney had made no announcement when ticket outlets withdrew ads and posted call-off notices for the duo’s International Players tour. Upset followers accused the band of having set unrealistic prices, with tickets costing between $100 and $300 – and of having been unrealistic in attempting to play at arena-sized venues in the first place.
