The Office for National Statistics (ONS) in a statement released today confirmed that between January and March, the UK's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 0.7% higher than the 0.6% initial estimate. It means that the UK economy bounced back even stronger than first expected from a recession at the end of 2023, when the economy contracted by 0.1% in the third quarter and 0.3% in the fourth quarter. The original figure for the first quarter of the year was stronger than economists had expected, and growth in the services sector, which includes businesses such as hairdressers, banks, and ...

With the UK’s general election just a week away, the reigning Conservative Party looks set to suffer a devastating defeat after 14 years in power. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the party’s poll numbers have remained stuck at a record low for more than a year and a half — and the election he called by surprise at the end of May has done nothing to improve them. Instead, the campaign has been a catastrophe. Sunak announced the snap election outdoors in the pouring rain, then appeared at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, where reporters duly asked him if his party resembled a ...

Labour leader Keir Starmer has vowed to "get a better deal on trade relations with the EU" if he becomes prime minister in next week's UK general election. "I do not accept that we can't get a better deal than the one that we've got," Starmer said during a BBC head-to-head debate with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday evening, presented by Michal Husain. "I'm going to go back into the EU. I'm going to fight for a better deal so you can trade more easily," he added, responding to a question from the audience about how the candidates would restore the UK's ability to trade freely. The UK f...

Labour and its current leader, Keir Starmer, could be set to lead the United Kingdom after 14 years in opposition — if the polls hold. The opposition centre-left party is well ahead of the ruling Conservatives in the polls for next week's general election in the UK, garnering 36% of support over the Tories' 20%, according to YouGov's latest poll. For many in Brussels, the rise in Labour's popularity has brought on a series of questions, including whether the party could rethink its 2016 referendum-confirmed decision to leave the EU. Starmer, a risk-averse former barrister, has ruled out any ra...

Endurance swimmer Joan Fennelly is undaunted by frigid water and long distances, swimming year-round in the wild. But she takes extra precautions in her own backyard. The River Thames is one of Britain's many waterways contaminated with sewage and agricultural pollution. “If it looks right, if its smells right, I’ll go in," Fennelly said. Britain has become notorious as a place where a casual swim could lead to an extended visit to the toilet, if not the hospital. A torrent of news on dirty water has spilled into next month's election to determine which party controls government for the next f...

UK retail sales rose sharply in May, boosted by an improvement in the weather after April's heavy showers kept shoppers indoors. Sales volumes hit 2.9% in May, up from a revised 1.8% fall in April, according to the Office for National Statistics. That was higher than expectations; a Reuters poll of economists had forecast sales volumes of 1.5%. Compared with the same time last year, May's sales volumes were 1.3% higher, following a revised 2.3% fall in April. The ONS pointed out the sales growth might also have been affected by an extra public holiday last May, for King Charles III's coronatio...

With just two weeks to go until a snap general election, Britain’s ruling Conservative Party looks set to face what could be its biggest defeat in more than a century. While the Labour Party is expected to win a landslide victory, much of the credit for the Conservatives’ downfall will be due to an insurgent party to their right. According to the polls, the anti-immigration, anti-”woke” and culturally traditionalist party Reform UK, led by leading Brexit activist and former MEP Nigel Farage, is set to take as much as 15% or more of the national vote. One poll that showed it leading the Tories ...

After one of its warmest and wettest winters on record, a general election has been called in the UK for 4 July. Climate has been on the back burner when it comes to campaigning so far. There has been a greater focus on the cost of living, healthcare and security from most politicians. Pledges, policies and plans to tackle the climate crisis haven’t been easy to find. Though the consensus is generally that emissions need to be cut, renewables need to grow and pollution must be reduced, approaches from each of the different parties vary. We’ve taken a look at six of the most pressing climate is...

There’s a new, artificial face in the UK’s general election: AI Steve. Steve Endacott, the man behind the artificial intelligence (AI), is an entrepreneur from the south of England who wants his avatar to be present in the House of Commons as the MP for the Brighton Pavillion constituency. "I am setting up my own party after growing disillusioned with how much the others are out of contact with the UK population," Endacott said in a LinkedIn Post. "I will try to use technology to connect directly with the views of my constituents". I became friends with an AI avatar on the Replika app. This is...
