United Airlines posted a smaller loss than analysts had expected in the past quarter despite the weeks-long grounding of Boeing 737-9 Max aircraft. The temporary grounding of several dozen Boeing aircraft in January cost the US airline around $200 million. Without this burden, United would have closed the quarter with a profit, the airline said after the US stock exchange closed on Tuesday. The share price rose by around 5% at times in after-hours trading on Tuesday. The bottom line was a loss of $124 million, compared to a loss of $194 million in the same quarter last year. The adjusted loss ...

New York (AFP) - United Airlines said Monday it has discovered loose bolts on Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes in its fleet during preliminary inspections following an Alaska Airlines mid-flight incident. United has "found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug -- for example, bolts that needed additional tightening," the carrier said. On Friday, an Alaska Airlines passenger plane made an emergency landing after the door plug component blew out. "We're working to return our Boeing 737 MAX 9s to service in the days ahead," United said in a statement. United has canceled...

New York (AFP) - United Airlines reported on Wednesday that second-quarter profits more than tripled, benefitting from robust travel demand and a surge in international capacity. The big US carrier raised its full-year profit forecast following the better-than-expected results, even as total seat capacity lagged expectations for the period. Profits were $1.1 billion compared with $329 million in the year-ago period, while revenues rose 17 percent to $14.2 billion. International travel capacity jumped 27 percent compared with the year-ago level. The results showed no financial hit from the diff...

United Airlines Holdings Inc. canceled more flights than any other airline totaling 751 on Wednesday. The Denver International Airport was hit the hardest among all the airports. Scott Kirby, the Chief Executive Officer of United, was able to overcome this by flying with a private airplane from Teterboro Airport to Denver. Kirby released a statement with his apologies. “Taking a private jet was the wrong decision because it was insensitive to our customers who were waiting to get home,” he wrote. “I sincerely apologize to our customers and our team members who have been working around-the-cl...

New York (AFP) - United Airlines reported a quarterly loss on Tuesday but offered a bullish summer outlook in light of travel demand that it said still shows no sign of ebbing. The major US carrier reported a first-quarter loss of $194 million, despite a 51.1 percent surge in revenues compared with the year-ago period to $11.4 billion. But results were hit by higher costs, especially on salaries and for jet fuel. Still, United Chief Executive Scott Kirby echoed comments from rival Delta Air Lines in touting a still-strong travel market as it eyes a busy summer travel season. "We are watching t...

Charleston (United States) (AFP) - United Airlines on Tuesday unveiled an order of 100 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with options for an additional 100 jets, as the company banks on rebounding demand for international travel following a years-long pandemic slowdown. The huge order, the largest by an American carrier for this class of aircraft, marks a victory for Boeing after 346 people died in two major 737 MAX crashes that grounded the jet globally for more than a year and a half. Boeing has targeted mid-decade to return to its pre-pandemic financial health after the 737 MAX scandal and other ...

New York (AFP) - United Airlines reported strong third-quarter results Tuesday and said it does not expect inflation and other macroeconomic headwinds to derail the travel industry's comeback. The major US carrier improved in key revenue benchmarks compared with the comparable pre-pandemic 2019 stretch, making the period "by most metrics, the best operational quarter in our history," as Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby put it. Compared with the 2019 quarter, United had about 10 percent fewer passengers and also about 10 percent lower seat capacity in the just-finished quarter. But revenues ...

New York (AFP) - US air safety regulators have cleared United Airlines to resume service on more than 50 Boeing 777 planes that were grounded over engine issues, a United executive said Tuesday. The news -- confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration -- comes as United and other airlines prepare for a heavy summer travel season. The jets have been grounded since February 2021, when a United Airlines plane scattered debris over suburban Denver after an engine failure. The jet landed safely, but the FAA issued an emergency order requiring inspection of the engines made by Pratt & Whitney. ...

Major airline carrier United Airlines (NYSE:UAL) stock has been plunging with the market sell-off despite improvement in its underlying business. The epicenter stock of the pandemic can’t seem to catch a break. Even as the reopening was accelerated by spread of COVID vaccinations, Omicron surged to negatively impact bookings. Just as spring bookings started to recover in January, Putin decides to invade Ukraine. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has hurt the airline industry directly and indirectly. While flights into and out of Russia are no longer available, it’s the rising fuel prices that ar...
