All eyes are again on the Middle East and some 5.5 million Palestinians following coordinated announcements by Spain, Ireland and Norway on Wednesday they would recognise Palestine as a state. The Palestinian state's road to recognition and participation in international institutions has been arduous and pockmarked with major roadblocks. For the Palestinian people, each diplomatic victory came at the cost of heightened tensions, significant pushback and outright conflict on the ground. Russia has launched a counterspace weapon into orbit capable of attacking a nearby U.S. government satellite, Washington officials said earlier this week. "On May 16, Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that the United States assesses is likely a counterspace weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit," Robert Wood, the U.S. alternative representative for Special Political Affairs at the U.N., said on May 20. Wood described the move as "troubling." Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Pat Ryder separately said on May 21 that the U.S. was monitori...

An international ocean court has just delivered a “historic” legal opinion outlining countries’ obligations in the face of climate change. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) - a UN court on maritime law - found that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions can be considered a marine pollutant. It said countries have a legal obligation to implement measures mitigating their effect on oceans. ITLOS’s expert opinion was requested last September by a group of nine small island states in the Pacific and Caribbean threatened by rising sea levels: the Commission of Small Island S...

Humanitarian aid for Ukraine is falling as its need only increases, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR warned on May 20. In an interview with AFP, Karolina Lindholm Billing, the UNHCR's representative in Ukraine, said there are 4 million displaced people in the country, including "some very, very vulnerable people." Billing said the situation was only worsening as Russia's full-scale invasion drags into its third year, but funding for international humanitarian aid was slowing down. The U.N. has a humanitarian plan for Ukraine that requires $3.1 billion this year, including $599 million for the UNH...

Despite efforts to curb wildlife trafficking worldwide over the past 20 years, more than 4,000 species are still affected, a new report reveals. The majority of them are endangered. The World Wildlife Crime Report, released by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) today, says this inflicts “untold harm upon nature”, including driving some rare species to extinction. The impact of wildlife crime stretches far beyond the direct threat to species, devastating delicate ecosystems, removing a key source of income for nature-dependent communities, and undermining the Earth’s capacity to mitigate ...

Iran and the United Nations' nuclear watchdog are still negotiating over how to implement a deal struck last year to expand inspections of the Islamic Republic's rapidly advancing atomic program, officials said on Tuesday. The acknowledgement by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, shows the challenges his inspectors face, years after the collapse of Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers and the wider tensions gripping the Middle East in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Grossi has previously warned that Tehran has enriched uranium close to w...
