British lawmakers will on Tuesday debate and vote on the government's plans to introduce a landmark smoking ban that aims to stop young people from ever smoking. The bill, a key policy announced by Conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak last year, will make it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born after 2009. It has the support of the opposition Labour Party and is expected to pass. But Sunak faces rebellion from more libertarian-minded members of his party, who criticised the proposals as "unconservative". E-cigarette users had similar changes to the DNA in specific cheek cells as smokers, according to a new study that provides some insight into the health effects of vaping. The researchers studied the effects of smoking and e-cigarette use on the way genes work, which is known as epigenetics. They looked at a common way gene expression is regulated by looking at DNA methylation - a process where a chemical group is added to DNA - in more than 3,500 cheek, blood and cervix samples. “All cells within a person share the same DNA, but DNA methylation and other modifications, together referred to as...

More than half of smokers in England inaccurately think that vaping is more or as harmful as cigarette smoking, according to a new study. The study included survey responses from more than 28,000 smokers in England between 2014 and 2023. Some 57 per cent of respondents thought vaping was more or equally as harmful as smoking, while 27 per cent thought e-cigarettes were more harmful. “The risks of vaping are much lower than the risks of smoking and this isn’t being clearly communicated to people,” said Sarah Jackson, lead author and principal research fellow at University College London. “This ...

Washington (AFP) - E-cigarette sales in the United States spiked between 2020 and 2022, especially among flavors that appeal to youth users, according to a study from health authorities released Thursday. Overall e-cigarette monthly unit sales went up nearly 47 percent from the start of 2020 to the end of 2022, a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found. In January 2020, right before the Covid-19 pandemic reached the United States, 15.5 million e-cigarettes were sold, while 22.7 million units were sold in December 2022, the study said. The hike was especially prono...

Washington (AFP) - The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said it was ordering all products produced by Juul Labs off the market after finding the vaping giant had failed to address certain safety concerns. The decision, which Juul said it would appeal, clears the way for rival brands to increase their share of the market it once dominated. It is also a blow for tobacco giant Altria, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, which acquired a 35 stake in Juul in 2018 to diversify its business strategy in the face of falling smoking rates. "Today's action is further progress on the FDA's commitment...

Washington (AFP) - The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said it was ordering all vaping products produced by Juul Labs off the market after finding the former industry leader had failed to address certain safety concerns. The decision clears the way for rival brands to increase their share of the market, which Juul once dominated. "Today's action is further progress on the FDA's commitment to ensuring that all e-cigarette and electronic nicotine delivery system products currently being marketed to consumers meet our public health standards," said FDA Commissioner Robert Califf in a ...

New York (AFP) - US health authorities are expected to order Juul Labs to stop selling e-cigarettes in the world's biggest economy, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The announcement, which could come as early as Wednesday, follows a two-year review of data presented in connection with Juul's application to sell tobacco- and menthol-flavored products in the United States, said the newspaper, which cited anonymous sources. Juul did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The FDA also did not respond to a query. Juul has come under fire over its marketing of fruit and candy ...

Washington (AFP) - More than two million American middle and high schoolers reported they were vapers in 2021, with eight in ten using flavored e-cigarettes, a government report said Thursday as the US regulator neared a key decision on the future of the industry. The latest figure for youth vapers represents a decline from 3.6 million in 2020, but that could be at least partly driven by socialization restrictions and access to vaping products during the Covid pandemic. The report's authors also said that because the more than 20,000 surveys they sent out between January and May were filled i...
