Ukraine has imposed emergency power shutdowns across most of the country, a day after Russia unleashed large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure. The shutdowns were in place in all but three regions following Saturday's drone and missile attack on energy targets that injured at least 19 people. Ukraine's state-owned power grid operator Ukrenergo said the shutdowns affected both industrial and household consumers. Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid in recent weeks have forced the government to institute nationwide rolling blackouts. Without adequate air defences to counter such assaults...

Ukraine urgently needs the West's go-ahead to launch attacks on Russian territory with donated weapons, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday after signing a long-term security deal with Belgium that includes the provision of 30 F-16s fighter jets by 2028. The deal, however, prohibits Ukraine from deploying the sought-after aircraft to strike targets located on Russian soil. This follows a long-held policy by Western allies that compels Kyiv to use donated weapons and ammunition strictly within its territory, parts of which are currently occupied by Russian forces. Allies worry that if...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stark warning ahead of the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland, saying the absence of his US counterpart Joe Biden would represent a "standing ovation" to Russia's Vladimir Putin. While the US intends to attend the meeting, scheduled to take place between 16 and 17 June, it has not yet confirmed whether Biden, a staunch advocate of Kyiv and the trans-Atlantic alliance, would be the one representing the country. Zelenskyy chided leaders of Central Asian states for so far not agreeing to attend. The Peace Summit is a format that will not allow Putin to lie anymore. ...

Weeks of Russian strikes on Ukraine's power grid have forced leaders of the war-ravaged country to institute nationwide rolling blackouts. However, there are warnings shortages could worsen without the right defences for Ukraine, especially as demand spikes in late summer and freezing winters. Russian airstrikes targeting the grid since March have brought blackouts back to Kyiv, which hadn’t experienced them since the first year of the war. An strike in April damaged the Ukrainian capital's largest thermal power plant, while a massive attack on 8 May hit power generation and transmission facil...
