Spain’s drought-stricken region of Catalonia will install a floating desalination plant to help the city of Barcelona guarantee its drinking water supply, regional authorities said Thursday. Barcelona already relies on Europe’s largest desalination plant for domestic use to compensate over three years of below average rainfall that have led to a historic drought made worse by climate change. In February, Catalonia's regional government declared a drought emergency for much of the surrounding region. Now Spain’s second-largest city will get a temporary second desalination plant in its port late...

With cloud seeding, it may rain, but it doesn't really pour or flood - at least nothing like what drenched the United Arab Emirates and paralysed Dubai this week, meteorologists have said. Cloud seeding, although decades old, is still controversial in the weather community, mostly because it has been hard to prove that it does very much. No one reports the type of flooding that on Tuesday doused the UAE, which often deploys the technology in an attempt to squeeze every drop of moisture from a sky that usually gives less than 10 to 13 centimetres of rain a year. "It's most certainly not cloud s...

Much of Western Europe has repeatedly been swept by clouds of Saharan dust in recent weeks, turning the skies hazy and diminishing air quality, with parts of the continent shrouded in a particularly orange tinge over the Easter weekend. The small particles blown up all the way from the Sahara Desert can be a particular nuisance for drivers, as the dust tends to meticulously cover cars. Dust alone is not a problem for your vehicle, but the particles arriving from the Sahara can cause damage when not cleaned properly, road safety experts from Auto Club Europa (ACE) warn. German insurers plan to provide better warnings about the risk of flash floods during storms in future. "The July 2021 flood in particular showed that the flood simulations used to date do not depict flash floods accurately enough," said Anja Käfer-Rohrbach, deputy managing director of the German Insurance Association. From next year onwards, the risk of sudden flooding will therefore be modelled, she said. This data will be fed into a portal that will help insurers to answer the question of which buildings are at risk of flooding and to what extent. So far, only the risks of flooding and heav...

Scientists are scrambling to figure out why smalltooth sawfish, marine creatures that have been around for millions of years, are dying at an alarming rate in Florida waters. The endangered animals are also exhibiting unusual "spinning" and "whirling" behavior, puzzling wildlife officials who are ramping up rescue and rehabilitation efforts, Knewz.com has learned.
