With summer just around the corner, we’re all dreaming of sunshine and swimming in the sea - but with the hot weather comes the risk of wildfires. That’s where the European Union comes in. From June, they’re putting in place measures to bolster firefighting efforts in order to better protect communities across Europe - and the surrounding environment. Following devastating fires in 2023 - recorded as some of the very worst this century - the EU has put together a team of 556 firefighters from 12 countries. They’ll be strategically placed across key locations in Europe this summer, including in...

How did deadly wildfires in Hawaii last year impact people's health? A new study found that nearly half of people in Maui affected by the fires "experienced a decline in health," compared to a year ago. Roughly 74 per cent of study participants had poor respiratory health or elevated risk for cardiovascular disease due to hypertension. The University of Hawaii study looked at 679 people as part of ongoing research into the impact of the fires on health. More than half of the participants lived in the fire perimeter area. Heat-related deaths are on the rise in Europe as the effects of climate c...

Greece’s fire season officially starts in May, but dozens of fires have already been put out over the past month after temperatures began hitting 30 degrees Celsius in late March - considerably higher than previous spikes recorded over the past decade. “It’s actually already summer for us,” said Fire Lieutenant Colonel Ioannis Kolovos during a recent training exercise. “The truth is that the fire season has started prematurely and has been extended over the last five years.” His 10-member elite fire crew from the 1st Wildfire Special Operation Unit bristles with tools needed to hold back fires...

On Tuesday, the daily high in parts of the southern island of Crete topped 30 degrees Celsius, more than 20 degrees higher than what was registered in much of northern Greece. People took to social media to express surprise at the orange skies that covered the city. The strong southerly winds over the past few days have also fanned...

Washington (AFP) - In a first, US climate scientists have quantified the extent to which greenhouse gasses from the world's top fossil fuel companies have contributed to wildfires. Their analysis, published Tuesday in Environmental Research Letters, found that carbon dioxide and methane emissions from the so-called "Big 88" firms were responsible for more than a third of the area scorched by forest blazes in western North America over the past 40 years. First author Kristina Dahl, of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), told AFP wildfires in the western United States and southwestern Canad...

It’s the New Year (2022), but Sadly, we’re starting the year with a horrific mid-winter incinerating wildfire in Boulder County Colorado and that unfolding disaster. [soros] Q3 2021 hedge fund letters, conferences and more Given this disaster and the suffering, is it reasonable to ask that you to take 10-minutes out of your day to understand what’s happened, and how you can help prevent future disasters like this?
