Exports of German wines rose 9% on the year in the first quarter to €92 million ($99 million) partly on the back of strong demand from China, the German Wine Institute reported on Thursday. The increase measured by quantity also came in at 9%, with 283,000 hectolitres of German wine being sold abroad. The production of rosé wines has reached an all-time high in Germany, while at the same time the trend towards dry wines is continuing, the German Wine Institute (DWI) announced on Friday. The increase in rosés is at the expense of red wines, it reported, while white wine is once again the most popular. France's winegrowers are facing declining sales at home and abroad compounded by falling producer prices, despite achieving an above-average grape harvest last year. The situation has been caused by rising inflation and the fact that the French are drinking less wine, the Agriculture Ministry said in its latest market analysis.
