World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed regret that no agreement could be reached on a pandemic treaty at the UN body's annual meeting, which started in Geneva on Monday. But he expressed hope on a future agreement. "No one said multilateralism is easy, but there is no other way," Tedros told the World Health Assembly, the WHO's decision-making body. Signing the treaty was to have marked the meeting's highpoint. Negotiators failed to reach a consensus on sensitive subjects such as the distribution of medicines, protective materials and vaccines in ...

After more than 20 years of negotiations, UN member countries agreed on the management of genetic resources and traditional knowledge, the UN agency for intellectual property said. The UN's World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said the treaty stipulates that countries are to receive a share in the profits if their ancient plant knowledge or resources are used by foreign firms for various products, including pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Companies are now required to disclose the origin of their materials and ideas during patent applications. This allows countries of origin to check...

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is calling for better protection for radioactive material while it is being transported. Last year, 31 countries reported a total of 168 cases in which radioactive materials were stolen, lost or otherwise fell into the wrong hands. The figures were published by the IAEA on Monday at the start of a nuclear safety conference in Vienna, and are in line with the long-term average. There have been more than 4,200 such incidents in total since records began in 1993. The IAEA, which serves as the UN's nuclear watchdog, says more than half of all thefts of...

Wildlife trafficking has not substantially reduced over the past two decades, despite positive signs in reducing trafficking of iconic species like elephant and rhino, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported in Vienna on Monday. "The global scope and scale of wildlife crime remain substantial with seizures during 2015–2021 indicating an illegal trade in 162 countries and territories affecting around 4,000 plant and animal species," the office's third edition of the World Wildlife Crime Report says. During the six-year period, around 13 million individual animals and plants had been s...

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said efforts to fight climate change should rely more heavily on private investment in addition to public funding during a speech to the Petersberg Climate Dialogue on Friday. "A discussion that only focuses on public funding commitments falls far short of the mark. We need a new approach to financing climate protection worldwide," Scholz said in Berlin. He pointed out that, according to expert estimates, $2.4 trillion would be needed annually by 2030 for the transition to climate-friendly energy in developing and emerging countries alone. "That is a huge sum," sa...

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said that industrialized nations must be held financially responsible for tackling climate change, but that the private sector share of climate finance must increase, too. "We, in the industrialized countries, need to continue to live up to our responsibilities," she said on Thursday at this year's Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin, where representatives of about 40 states were in attendance. The gathering serves as a starting signal for the next UN climate negotiations, which will take place in Azerbaijan in November. Baerbock said that $5 tri...

Human rights worldwide are facing their most serious threats in decades, the London-based advocacy group Amnesty International said in its annual report on Wednesday. The organization highlighted the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine as well as the spread of authoritarian governments which are damaging the international order by violating international law and disregarding fundamental rights. "Israel's flagrant disregard for international law is compounded by the failures of its allies to stop the indescribable civilian bloodshed meted out in Gaza," said Amnesty Secretary general Agnès Callamard. ...

The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has called on Europe to be more innovative. Especially in comparison to the United States, Europe is lagging behind, Georgieva said on Thursday at the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington. There is a power of innovation in the US, she said. It is easy there to turn this into a business and ultimately realize it on a larger scale. Europe, on the other hand, still has a lot to do to unleash the power of innovation, she said. Georgieva cited the different prices for patents as an example. According to Georgieva, ...
