Gavin Newsom survived a California recall. Is he a lock to win another term?
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The last time Gavin Newsom’s name was on the ballot in California, he faced dozens of opponents in a chaotic recall election that drew national attention and was sparked by opposition to his handling of the pandemic. At one point the polls suggested a close race and his chief challenger, conservative talk show host Larry Elder, appeared to have a realistic chance of unseating the Democratic governor. Nine months later, Newsom is facing the voters again but the circumstances of the June 7 primary couldn’t be more different. After beating last September’s recall by a resound...

Dog goes home after saving California woman from mountain lion attack
REDDING, Calif. — Eva didn’t look too bad, considering three days earlier she nearly died in the jaws of a mountain lion. The 2½-year-old Belgian Malinois on Thursday night walked out of the VCA Asher Animal Hospital in Redding with her owner, Erin Wilson, at her side. Eva was a little groggy from the pain meds, a few patches of her fur were shaved for stitches, and she had pink surgical tape wrapped above each of her front paws. But Eva was wagging her tail as Wilson sat down on some grass outside the clinic and wrapped her arms around the dog that she credits for saving her life. “I would do...

Gov. Newsom’s inflation relief package could drive up prices even more, experts say
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An $18.1 billion inflation relief packageproposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom will put salve on key pain points for Californians most affected by rising gas and grocery prices but also likely will cause prices to tick up just a tad more, leading economists say. The Newsom package also won’t likely stave off a possible recession, the fear of which tanked the markets on Wednesday, experts said. There’s an underlying theme of this spring’s ongoing NBA playoffs that might provides an important case study in roster building — something the Sacramento Kings should pay close attention to after they landed the No. 4 pick in the upcoming draft. Jayson Tatum, Giannis Antentokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Stephen Curry, Ja Morant, Nicola Jokic and Joel Embiid have all become stars for the teams that brought them into the NBA. Which is notable given the recent run the “...

Commentary: How a million American COVID deaths somehow understates the enormity of the loss
A million Americans have been lost to the pandemic, according to the federal government’s official count, making this a disaster that defies most comparisons. And yet it’s so much worse. By the time the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the nation had reached the bleak crossroads this week, it was in all likelihood old news and a gross underestimate. According to one recent systematic study of global excess mortality, the difference between expected and actual deaths, the United States had likely already lost 1.13 million due to the pandemic by the end of last year02796...

FEMA turned down California county’s request for wildfire aid. Residents beg Biden for help
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Tobi Magdison wants President Joe Biden to “keep to your promise” to the wildfire victims of El Dorado County. Candace Tyler wants to know why she and other fire victims have been overlooked by the federal government. El Dorado County government officials released a five-minute video Tuesday in which residents plead with Biden to grant “individual assistance” to survivors of last summer’s disastrous Caldor Fire, which destroyed 1,003 homes and other buildings and burned through 221,835 acres.
