Tokyo stocks open lower on concern over prolonged U.S. rate hikes

Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday, weighed down by concern over prolonged interest rate hikes in the United States.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 79.93 points, or 0.29 percent, from Friday to 27,433.20. The broader Topix index was down 2.08 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,989.85.

Decliners were led by mining, precision instrument, and electric appliance issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 134.30-31 yen compared with 134.09-19 yen in New York and 134.79-81 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0684-0685 and 143.49-51 yen against $1.0689-0699 and 143.47-57 yen in New York, and $1.0643-0645 and 143.46-50 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
