At the SAG Awards on Sunday night, Christina Applegate, 51, walked the red carpet with her 12-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the Netflix show Dead to Me.

The actress wore a black velvet tuxedo dress and held a walking cane that had the letters: “FU MS.”

Applegate confirmed her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis in 2021 and said earlier this month that the SAG Awards would most likely be her last awards ceremony due to the debilitating symptoms of the disease.

The actress was diagnosed with MS while filming the third season of Dead to Me.

She said that it took her months to watch her performance because she didn’t want to see herself struggling onscreen. She had gained 40 pounds due to inactivity and medication and recalled that she didn’t look or feel like herself.

In December 2022, Applegate went on The Kelly Clarkson Show and said that she often used her job to shift her focus away from her real-life problems, including past trauma, deaths and her battle with breast cancer.

She recounted that her role in Dead to Me gave her the opportunity to grieve for the first time and release the pent-up emotions in reaction to her MS diagnosis. She noted that it was cathartic to be able to fall apart in a scene without having to make jokes all the time.
