The Labour Party has demanded that the current Prime Minister intervene and block Boris Johnson’s proposal to knight his own father.
Stanley Johnson, known for his work on environmental issues, previously served as a Conservative member of the European Parliament for the Wight and Hampshire East constituency from 1979 to 1984. He also has experience working at the World Bank and European Commission and has authored several books on environmental topics.
Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick has questioned on the BBC Question Time, the wisdom of a Prime Minister nominating a family member for an honor, stating “No, absolutely not.” Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been urging Rishi Sunak to take control of the matter. Starmer said, “We would be quicker listing the people he is not giving an honor to. The public thinks that Rishi Sunak needs to rein this in and take control over what is becoming a pretty ridiculous situation.”
The situation has escalated as Johnson is also planning to put forward Paul Dacre, the renowned Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Mail, for a peerage. The list is causing a stir in political circles.
Paul Dacre’s nomination has caused further controversy, as the Daily Mail remains embroiled in a legal battle with high-profile individuals, including Prince Harry, over allegations of privacy breaches. Despite being rejected for the same reason last year, Johnson has put Dacre’s name forward again. The Prime Minister’s list has been reduced to around 50 nominations, down from the 100 proposed by previous leaders David Cameron and Theresa May.
