Stellantis pulled the sheet off of the upcoming 2025 Ram 1500 REV Tungsten at the 2023 New York International Auto Show last week. It’s the first time the production-intent electric truck has been on display to the media and the public, following a teaser reveal during a Super Bowl commercial this past February. In addition, Stellantis also touched on the upcoming Ram 1500 REV XR extended-range electric truck on the horizon. This article reflects the latest details of this upcoming truck.
Up until last week, the world only knew Ram’s upcoming range-extender electric truck as the “REPB“. That’s short for Range Extending Paradigm Breaker. Now, we know the name: the Ram 1500 REV XR. It sounds like a computer program, yes, but it’s also the first range-extended electric truck that’s been so far confirmed by any major automaker. General Motors and Ford Motor Company have only confirmed future electric trucks for now.
What will make the Ram 1500 REV XR so special, and why will truck customers gravitate towards it? Simply put, it will have an engine. But rather than work as a mechanical powertrain that drives the wheels, it will work as a generator that will create power for the truck’s battery pack in the event that they run out of a charge. For those of you that remember vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt, it will work very much in the same way.
That said, a timeline for the Ram 1500 REV XR was not immediately disclosed. Simply that it will follow the all-electric Ram 1500 REV, which is expected to have a maximum range of 500 miles, a 14,000 pound towing capacity, and the ability to run up to 10.8 kW of power for a myriad tasks ranging from lighting up a job site to powering a house in the event of a blackout. The first examples of the Ram 1500 REV are expected to roll off the assembly line in late 2024 as a 2025 model year vehicle. Now, imagine just how much that capability will be amplified with the addition of a range-extending engine.
It remains unclear just where the upcoming Ram 1500 REV electric truck will be assembled, but reports have indicated that it will either be at the Stellantis Warren Truck plant in Michigan, or the idled Belvidere plant in Illinois.
