With a five-star cast -- featuring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Helen Mirren, Michael Cera and Dua Lipa -- the comedy is one of the most anticipated of 2023. The film is already proving a hit thanks to a successful promotional strategy, notably including a series of distinctive posters. These feature, for example, Issa Rae with the slogan "This Barbie is President," Nicola Coughlan ("Bridgerton") with "This Barbie is a diplomat," Ritu Arya with "This Barbie has a Pulitzer" and Emma Mackey ("Sex Education") with "This Barbie has a Nobel Prize in physics."
These posters clearly amused internet users, who soon turned them into social media memes. And it is, in particular, thanks to the generator developed by Warner Bros. that this trend has taken off. The person in the picture is then cut out and the background removed. Then, users can modify the automatically-generated slogan, based on "Barbie is..." or "Ken is...", before choosing the color of their poster. Once finished, the poster can be directly downloaded to be shared on social networks. The Warner Bros. platform also reminds users to add the #BarbieTheMovie hashtag when posting their meme.
This meme generator has been successful on Twitter, where some users decided to embrace humor. Andrew Garfield's poster, for example, riffs on one of the cult lines from the movie "The Social Network" with "This Barbie is coming back for everything." Others decided to pay tribute to cult black singers such as Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Diana Ross.
On TikTok, a filter has been specially created following this buzz, automatically giving users a slogan like "Barbie is a train wreck," "Barbie is a queen," "Barbie is a hot mess," and even "Barbie is a capitalist". More than 144,300 videos have already been posted on the Chinese social network.
