「私が憧れていた日本とやっと出会えたような気がします」―。デイビッド・ベアデンさん（72）は、かつて米国松下電器・ミッドウエスト社長を務めた人物。世話になった元上司の米国松下電器会長ＣＥＯなどを務めた岩谷英昭さんが生まれたまち、岡山県津山市を訪ねようと、娘のバイオメディカル研究員・クリスティーン・バンタバガンさん（32）を伴い、作州の地で３日間を過ごした。地元ではイリノイ州でも最大級のオーケストラであるエルジン交響楽団を立て直したことで知られる“炎の経営者”に作州の地はどのように映ったのか―。がいせん桜まつり開催中の新庄村の商店の軒下で話をきいた。デイビッドさんはパナソニックに24年間勤務しており、20回弱の来日経験がある。10年前もクリスティーンさんとともに訪日していて、東京や京都を訪れた。
――クリスティーンさん、10年振りの日本はいかがですか？
クリスティーン「父が日本の会社で働いていたので、ずっと日本に興味がありました。父はパナソニックの社員であることを誇りに思っていた。前回の訪日は大都市ばかりだったので、今度は田舎に行ってみたいと思っていました」
――ライトアップされた津山城に感激されたとお聞きしましたが？ デイビッド「建物（天守閣）はなくても、そのかつての威光をうかがい知ることができた。これが歴史・文化の力だ。君たち津山の人が誇りに思うのもよく分かる。私の上司が城のあるまちで育ったと思うと感慨深い」

――作州について感想を教えてください。
クリスティーン「都会と田舎のコントラストが印象的でした。田舎にはより伝統的な建物や風景が残っている。アニメやマンガ、映画、本で見聞きした、憧れてきた日本の風景はより田舎に多く残っている。やっと憧れの日本に来ることができたと感じました」
デイビッド「アメリカは若い国だ。歴史文化に我々は大きな魅力を感じる。例えば津山の城東の複雑で細い路地。一見不合理極まりないが、全てに歴史に裏付けられた意味があることに感動する」
――津山市は、観光立市宣言をしています。多くの外国の人に観光に来ていただきたいと思っていて、特にアフターコロナのインバウンドには期待も高まっています。津山・美作地域は、アメリカの人にとって魅力がありますか？
デイビッド「例えば、新庄村は、参勤交代が実際にあった場所だと聞いている。大名が実際にここを通ったわけだ。映画で何度かみた風景が、ここにかつてあったことにとても感激する。そして、この立派な桜。日本はかつてロシアと戦争をして勝った。戦勝を記念して植えられた特別な桜だ。その桜が目の前で花を付けている。目の前の全てが特別な瞬間だ」
クリスティーン「アメリカの若者はユニークな経験を求めています。彼らはモノにはもう興味がない。経験を重要視している。大切なのは、one of a a kind（唯一無二）の経験です。one of a kindが津山・美作地域にはあります。東京では経験できない、ここにしかない何かがあります」
デイビッド「いま、新庄村の小さな店の軒下で、散った桜の花びらを見ながら君と話をしている。静かに日が暮れようとしている。とてもリラックスした、濃密な時間だ。僕は君のような日本の若者と出会えたことをうれしく思っている。50歳？まだまだ若いよ(笑)。少し肌寒くなってきた。これから僕たちは宿に戻り、風呂に入って、おいしい食事をいただく。これがone of A kindな経験だ」
――２人は作州の地で積極的に多くの人たちと交流。小倉博俊新庄村長、谷口圭三津山市長を表敬訪問して意見を交わした。何か津山・美作地域の人たちに伝えたいことはありますか？
デイビッド「僕の住んでいるエルジンというまちは、津山と同じくらいの規模だ。すでにサンタフェと姉妹都市縁組をしているが、エルジンと津山が姉妹都市になれば素敵だと思う。アメリカの友人たちに、日本に行くならどこを勧めるかと聞かれたら、津山を勧めるよ。間違いないね。日本に滞在中は、多くの人たちに本当によくしてもらった。五つ星のホスピタリティに感謝している。『ここには何もないでしょう』という人がいて、とても驚いた。皆さんは、長い歴史のなかで培われた日本の素晴らしい精神性が凝縮された奇跡のようなまちで今を生きている。このことをもっと誇りに思うべきだ。きっとまた来るよ。ありがとうございました」
“Everything in front of you is special” “The one and only is here” / Okayama
“I feel like I’ve finally met the Japan that I longed for.” David Bearden, 72, was the former president of Matsushita Electric America’s Midwest. I decided to visit Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, where Hideaki Iwatani, the former chairman and CEO of Matsushita Electric America, was born. Accompanying him, he spent three days in Sakushu. How did the land of Sakushu appear to the “manager of the fire” known for rebuilding the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, one of the largest orchestras in Illinois locally? He listened to the story under the eaves of a store in Shinjo Village during the Geisen Cherry Blossom Festival. David has worked for Panasonic for 24 years and has visited Japan nearly 20 times. He visited Japan with Christine 10 years ago and visited Tokyo and Kyoto.
――Christine, how is Japan after 10 years?
Christine: I have always been interested in Japan because my father worked for a Japanese company. He was proud to be an employee of Panasonic. I wanted to go to the countryside.”
――I heard that you were moved by the illuminated Tsuyama Castle?
David: Even without the building (castle tower), I was able to get a glimpse of its former majesty. This is the power of history and culture. Thinking that I grew up in a certain town is deeply moving.”
――Please tell us your thoughts on Sakushu.
Christine: The contrast between the city and the countryside was impressive. In the countryside, there are more traditional buildings and landscapes.The landscapes of Japan that I admired in anime, manga, movies, and books are more rural. There are still many left. I felt that I was finally able to come to Japan, which I had always dreamed of.”
David: “America is a young country. We are greatly attracted to its history and culture. For example, the complex and narrow alleys of Joto in Tsuyama. At first glance, it seems extremely irrational, but I am moved by the fact that everything has a meaning backed by history.”
Tsuyama City has declared itself to be a tourist city. I would like many foreigners to come and visit us. In particular, expectations are rising for inbound after corona.
――Tsuyama has declared itself a tourism city. I would like many foreigners to come to Japan for sightseeing, and expectations are rising especially for inbound tourists after COVID-19. Is the Tsuyama/Mimasaka area attractive to Americans?
David: For example, I heard that Shinjo Village was the place where the Sankin Kotai actually took place. Daimyo actually passed through here. And then this splendid cherry tree.Japan once fought a war with Russia and won.It is a special cherry tree planted to commemorate the victory.The cherry blossoms are blooming in front of my eyes. All of the are special moments.”
Christine: Young people in America want unique experiences. They’re no longer interested in objects. There is of a kind in the Tsuyama/Mimasaka area.There is something that you can only experience here that you cannot experience in Tokyo.”
David: Right now, under the eaves of a small shop in Shinjo village, I’m talking to you while looking at the falling cherry blossom petals. I’m glad to have met a young Japanese like you.50 years old?You’re still young lol.It’s getting a little chilly.We’re going back to the inn, taking a bath, and having a delicious meal.This is the one. It’s a kind of experience.”
――You two actively interacted with many people in the land of Sakushu. They paid a courtesy visit to Shinjo Village Mayor Hirotoshi Ogura and Mitsuyama City Mayor Kei Taniguchi and exchanged opinions. Is there anything you would like to say to the people of the Tsuyama/Mimasaka area?
David: The town I live in, Elgin, is about the same size as Tsuyama. We already have a sister city relationship with Santa Fe, but I think it would be wonderful if Elgin and Tsuyama became sister cities. Also, if someone asks me where I would recommend going to Japan, I would definitely recommend Tsuyama.During my stay in Japan, many people treated me very well.Thank you for the five-star hospitality. I was very surprised to hear some people say, “Isn’t there anything here?” You are now living in a miraculous city that condenses the splendid spirituality of Japan cultivated over its long history.
