Baseball: Ohtani suffers 4th loss as Padres beat Angels

Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani suffered his fourth loss of the season Tuesday, giving up five runs in five-plus innings against the San Diego Padres.

The Padres won the game 8-5. Ohtani (7-4) left the mound in the sixth because of a right middle finger blister with the Angels trailing 5-1 after he yielded back-to-back home runs to Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth at Petco Park.

Ohtani allowed seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts in an 86-pitch outing.

At the plate, he went hitless in three at-bats before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning.

The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Cronenworth. Two innings later, Cronenworth followed Bogaerts' two-run homer with a blast of his own.

"I wanted to pitch as many innings as possible," said Ohtani, who allowed at least one runner every inning from the second. "It would've been pretty good if I had held them off the board in my last inning (a three-run sixth)."

Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (7-2) struck out 11 over seven innings of one-run ball.

The Angels were also dealt a huge blow as star center fielder Mike Trout was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left hamate fracture.

The injury will reportedly keep the three-time American League MVP sidelined for four to eight weeks.

Among other Japanese players, Minnesota Twins pitcher Kenta Maeda (2-5) picked up his second win after allowing two runs, one earned, in seven innings in a 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. He struck out nine and walked one.
