Will Mortal Kombat 1 have crossplay?

Most fighter games in 2023 have crossplay enabled, but NetherRealms is going a different route with Mortal Kombat 1, at least initially.

Mortal Kombat 1 is heading for a global release on September 19. It will be available on all major platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. But would players across these platforms be able to play with each other?

Crossplay is standard in most fighter games, so players had assumed Mortal Kombat 1 would also have it, but it seems NetherRealms is still sorting it out. Here’s what we know about the crossplatform feature in Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 crossplay explained

No, Mortal Kombat 1 will not have crossplay initially. It will be released globally without crossplay, but the feature may become available later.

Players across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch will not be able to fight each other, which is pretty disappointing. But NetherRealms hasn’t scratched out the possibility of a crossplay. According to the publisher, the feature will be added eventually, allowing players to crossplay.

“Kross-Play will not be available at launch but know we are hard at work at implementing the feature into the game, and it will be koming post-launch,” MK1 said in an X post.

The developer didn’t specify how soon after the launch, but has assured that it’s in the cards. Still, most players are bummed because crossplay allowed quicker matchmaking and added a challenge to the game. Moreover, it allowed players to cross-save between different platforms and queue with friends who may not be on the same platform as them.

So, the exclusion is disappointing for the fans of fighting games. Rest assured, the popular feature will be available sooner or later. It remains to be seen how long it takes NetherRealms to implement it.
