Chinese top diplomat vows "constructive role" for APEC success

Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi said Tuesday that China is willing to play a "constructive role" in the success of this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit to be held in San Francisco in November.

China and the United States have been exploring the possibility of a summit between President Xi Jinping and his counterpart Joe Biden on the sidelines of the APEC summit amid an intensifying rivalry between the world's two largest economies.

Wang did not clarify whether Xi will attend the San Francisco talks, only saying Beijing is communicating with the relevant parties and will make an announcement in due time.

He expressed hope that Washington will be keenly aware of its duty as the APEC host and "showcase openness, fairness, inclusiveness and responsibility" to facilitate a smooth meeting.

The top diplomat made the remarks at a press conference to unveil the country's white paper on development aid titled "A Global Community of Shared Future."

In the paper, Beijing pledged to contribute to solving global challenges such as climate change. The document was released ahead of a meeting in Beijing in October to mark the 10th anniversary of China's signature Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
