AI, virtual reality in spotlight at Japan's annual electronics show

Japan's major tech companies will showcase their latest technologies at the country's major annual electronics show from Tuesday, with products relating to artificial intelligence and virtual reality attracting particular attention.

More than 600 companies and organizations are participating in the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies that will be held in the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, near Tokyo, until Friday.

This year's event, to be held for the first time since coronavirus restrictions were fully removed, will feature various panel discussions and lectures, the organizer said. The event was held partly or fully online for the past three years.

The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, the event's organizer, said it expects more than 100,000 people, up 20,000 from last year, to visit the venue over the four days.

During a press event held Monday ahead of the official opening, NEC Corp. displayed generative AI technology designed for corporate use in Japan while Sony Group Corp. exhibited a game utilizing cross-reality, or XR, technology in which visually impaired people can play virtual catch.

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. showcased a system where users can move small robots through a smartphone interface. The system can be used to allow robots to do hazardous tasks in place of humans, among other duties, it said.
