CAMARO VS MUSTANG STARTS A NEW CHAPTER WITH LATEST COMPARISON TEST

People have been getting their hands on the 2024 S650 Ford Mustang for about a month now, and that means we’re about to see a lot of content surrounding the new muscle car and how it stacks up against previous generation Mustangs, or even rivals such as the Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE. Sure, it’s not a direct comparison, as the Camaro SS 1LE has more handling hardware than the 2024 Mustang GT. A more accurate head-to-head would have been with the mightier Dark Horse. But give it up for Throttle House for already publishing a solid comparison test between the sunsetting Camaro and the burgeoning new Mustang.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE vs 2024 Ford Mustang GT

The Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE trim features a 6.2L LT1 V8 engine that produces 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, and can be had with either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic. But what makes the 1LE the standout winner in many comparison tests against cliched German sports sedans, let alone the S550 Mustang, was its suite of performance kit. The wheels, Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and six-piston Brembo brakes from the mighty Camaro ZL1, all of which to handle its 650 hp, can be found on the Camaro SS 1LE. The 1LE package also adds an electronic limited slip differential, special tuning tuning for the magnetic dampers, springs and stabilizer bars, and bolstered Recaro seats to keep the driver locked in place.

On the other hand, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT, thanks to its fourth-gen Coyote V8 engine, produces 486 horsepower from the factory, verified by a recent test of the car on a dyno. That power is courtesy of two throttle body inductions and a dual intake that sucks in air through the distinctive openings on both sides of the grille. But is it enough to outmuscle the Camaro?

In the video created by Throttle House, we can see which car is superior when it comes to a drag race, though when it comes to the driving experience, there are plenty of good things to say about both cars. However, that’s just one part of the formula when purchasing a vehicle, as price points are also a thing, and the Ford Mustang GT Premium with Performance Package costs around $54,845. In contrast, the Chevrolet Camaro 2SS 1LE costs $57,490.

As pointed out in the video, Ford opted to keep the grand touring formula with the new Mustang GT rather than make it a sports car, at least compared to the Camaro SS 1LE. And this positioning may have been the fatal error of the Chevy, based on how the sixth-gen Camaro fared on the sales chart compared to the more GT-oriented and wildly popular fifth-gen. Indeed, the winning formula of a muscle car is to provide an affordable thrill, and needs to be little else.
